LAS VEGAS – Things are rocky for Paramount Pictures at the moment. While studio CEO and Chairman Brian Robbins and his team presented highlights of their upcoming 2024 slate, reports were breaking of corporate shareholders coming out publicly against a proposed merger with Skydance Media.

Glen Powell, action star? The actor arguably already made a foray into the genre in 2013’s “The Expendables 3” and 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” but this time, he’ll be the leading man and not in a supporting role. Greek weird wave filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, known for Academy Award-nominated favorites like “Poor Things” and “The Favourite,” is heading back to the Cannes Film Festival once again this year with his new film, “Kind Of Kindness.” And Searchlight Picture is wasting no time celebrating by releasing a new trailer for the film. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival was unveiled this morning, meaning there will be many first looks at some of the year’s most anticipated films. The most notable of the day is a first-look image of Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump and Jeremy Strong as his legal enforcer Roy Cohn in Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice.” Screening in competition at Cannes, “The Apprentice,” is a dive into the underbelly of the American empire.

In 2015, HBO’s Emmy-winning documentary series, “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” took the documentary world by storm, helping popularize the true-crime streaming obsession—additionally fueled by Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” also released the same year— which took off soon after. The series was a global phenomenon centered on the unsolved crimes that revolved around New York real estate heir Robert Durst.

Is Nia DaCosta headed back to the horror genre? Deadline reports that the “Candyman” director is in talks with Sony Pictures to direct the second film in the upcoming “28 Years Later” trilogy. Jaafar Jackson is at his best on stage playing his uncle and, truth be told, his dance moves are uncanny.

Following the resounding success of Margot Robbie’s blockbuster hit “Barbie,” the highest-grossing film of 2023, her production company LuckyChap is now venturing into new ventures with Lionsgate. Announced during Lionsgate’s panel today at CinemaCon 2024 in Vegas, Robbie’s company will produce an adaptation of the “Monopoly” board game, further solidifying the actor’s rising status as a mega-producer, The classic Parker Brothers board game doesn’t have much of a narrative outside of the aim to collect all the money from other players, and the game’s primary mascot is Mr.

“Rumours” is on the way. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Bleecker Street, the indie film studio, has released a new highlight sizzle reel emphasizing their greatest hits film accomplishments and a tease of what’s to come with never-before-seen footage.

CinemaCon 2024 is in full swing in Las Vegas, and some exciting news came from Lionsgate’s film panel, including info on two upcoming Henry Cavill movies with the studio. While he only just earned his first Oscar in 2023 for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Colin Farrell has been spending a decent amount of time on the small screen. Between his new Apple TV+ show “Sugar” (read our review right here) and the upcoming Max series “The Penguin” (a crime series spinoff of “The Batman”), Farrell seems to have found a new niche.

Alex Garland’s political war thriller, “Civil War” opens in theaters this Friday, April 12, and now that all the reviews have arrived (read ours here), A24 is giving the film one last push, using some of the breathless raves as quotes to stir up excitement. After winning a Peabody Award in 2023 and multiple Emmy Awards since its launch in 2020, HBO‘s “We’re Here” is back for another season with new hosts and a mission somehow more urgent than ever. The fourth season drops on April 26, and HBO has released a new trailer that demonstrates how the current political environment is putting queer people’s lives at stake.

Built on a wearying cheerful optimism/cruel fatalism dichotomy—contrasting chords that aren’t all that engaging or novel to begin with but repeated ad nauseum regardless—it’s astonishing just how quickly the post-apocalyptic sci-fi series, “Fallout,” wears out its welcome. Former enfante terrible filmmaker Harmony Korine (“Gummo“) has said he’s bored with conventional moviemaking and thinks video games, A.I., and experiential films are the way of the future. And well, he’s really putting his money where his mouth is with “Argro Dr1ft,” his latest feature, an experimental assassin movie that debuted at the Venice Film Festival last year (read our review).

“He’s not alone anymore.” Against seemingly all odds, given its R-rating, adult nature, and disconnection from traditional cinema superheroics, Warner Bros. “Joker” movie earned over $1 billion at the box office in 2019, the sixth highest-grossing movie of the year, even outgrossing “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” worldwide.

Having debuted at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, the immigration drama “Aisha” starring Letitia Wright (“Black Panther”) and Josh O’Connor (“Challengers”), is finally coming to North American theaters. Distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Tubi Films, “Aisha” has been set for a May 10, 2024 release.
