Song You Need: rodneyy’s “fanmail remix” is an anthem for the online generation

It wouldn’t be unfair to call rodneyy’s #OGTG a bit of a data dump. A few of the project's 24 tracks feel undercooked, but that’s what makes listening to the teenaged Atlanta rapper and producer so exciting — every song he makes, whether a loosie, mixtape cut, or producer credit is its own experiment that he’ll come back to and tinker with on a new track somewhere down the line.

Song You Need: “Looking At Your Pager” is Four Tet at his most festival-ready

Every acclaimed producer of intricate, thought-provoking dance music has a pop side. When Floating Points isn’t devoting his time to getting legendary jazz musicians out of retirement, he’s turning tracks by Thundercat and Headie One into monstrous, humid house bangers; Kelly Lee Owens counters her climate crisis-inspired club music with witty collaborations and inspired covers of tracks like Aaliyah’s “More Than A Woman.” And when Kieran Hebden doesn’t want to be Four Tet, he unlocks KH — a cheeky, sample-flipping alias that he used in 2019 to release “Only Human,” an almighty banger that turned Nelly Furtado’s “Afraid” into a shimmering, festival-conquering dance track.

Song You Need: Madonna and Sickick’s “Frozen on Fire” is an undeniable heater

Madonna is an undeniably terrible steward of her own legacy — you can’t really be a groundbreaking pop icon in multiple decades without being something of an anti-nostalgist. The way she’s treated Sickick’s TikTok-viral trap remix of her immortal Ray Of Light-era single “Frozen” is a perfect example of this: Rather than let it simply sit as a strange revival of the original, she gave the remix an official release and added verses by 070 Shake and Fireboy DML, sharing videos for each.

‘The Bourne Identity’s’ Doug Liman to Adapt ‘Rise and Kill First’ for Story Syndicate, Abot Hameiri (EXCLUSIVE)

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent“The Bourne Identity” helmer Doug Liman is attached to direct the adaptation of a chapter from acclaimed nonfiction book “Rise And Kill First.” It details how Israel’s Mossad reached out in desperation to former Nazi Waffen SS lieutenant colonel Otto Skorzeny, a favourite of Hitler’s -branded by British intelligence services as “the most dangerous man in Europe,” to thwart an existential threat to Israel’s existence. The stranger-than-fiction true story is set up at New York’s Story Syndicate (“I’ll Be Gone In the Dark,” “Britney vs Spears,” “Becoming Cousteau”), headed by Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning Dan Cogan and Liz Garbus, and at Israel’s Abot Hameiri, producer of “Shtisel,” “The Attaché” and “Power Couple.” A Fremantle company, its co-founder, Guy Hameiri, assembled the world-class direction-production team. A Cannes Festival alum with 2010’s Palme d’Or contender “Fair Game,” Liman will also oversee development of the limited series.

Song You Need: A pan-genre Houston collective unites in defiance of white supremacy

Free Radicals rarely practice subtlety. Founded nearly a quarter century ago, the Houston collective have released nine albums' worth of brash, unfiltered musical mayhem, encapsulating the essence of their city's superlative diversity with a sound that fuses funk, jazz, ska, reggae, klezmer, hip-hop, and countless other styles the world across.

Song You Need: Shaudy Kash and Top$ide are a dynamic duo

Shaudy Kash is a Detroit rapper who loves (in no specific order) fine women, R&B samples, and good weed. His conversational flow makes every song sound like one of your homies recounting a wild ass week where they ended up messing around with a whole friend group.

Song You Need: Vulnerability is the real horror in this instant hardcore classic

Wendy Eisenberg adds depth to everything they touch. Whether it's the refreshingly abrasive edge they bring to their folk-adjacent, jazz-based solo songs or the dissonant earth tones they add to their free improvisation with legendary experimenters such as John Zorn, they have a knack for making fresh tracks in well-trodden soil.

Song You Need: HTRK wander into lo-fi bliss on “No Big Thing”

Listening to an artist's demos is very sensitive to context. No matter how much I love hearing Prince finding his way through a song on collections like Originals and Piano & A Microphone, the fact that these albums were released without the famously controlling artist's expressed permission can make hearing them feel like an intrusion.

Song You Need: BAYLI ’s “Telly Bag” is for everyone

A quick Google search of "Bushwick Birkin," the affectionate name given to the wildly in-demand Telfar shopping bag, elicits questions such as "Why is Telfar so popular?" and "Does Beyoncé own Telfar?" Brooklyn-based artist BAYLI's new song "Telly Bag" doesn't answer those questions, necessarily, but its approachable and chic energy feels aligned with the utilitarian accessory that has become the go-to style choice of young queer people and people of color in the past few years. There's an effortless breeziness to "Telly Bag," specifically the way in which BAYLI's lyrics project a keen pursuit of glamor ("Take me out to Paris or Ibiza") while not forgetting financial realities ("Cop a flight out where the drinks are cheaper").
