When Floating Points isn’t devoting his time to getting legendary jazz musicians out of retirement, he’s turning tracks by Thundercat and Headie One into monstrous, humid house bangers; Kelly Lee Owens counters her climate crisis-inspired club music with witty collaborations and inspired covers of tracks like Aaliyah’s “More Than A Woman.” And when Kieran Hebden doesn’t want to be Four Tet, he unlocks KH — a cheeky, sample-flipping alias that he used in 2019 to release “Only Human,” an almighty banger that turned Nelly Furtado’s “Afraid” into a shimmering, festival-conquering dance track.

Madonna is an undeniably terrible steward of her own legacy — you can’t really be a groundbreaking pop icon in multiple decades without being something of an anti-nostalgist. The way she’s treated Sickick’s TikTok-viral trap remix of her immortal Ray Of Light-era single “Frozen” is a perfect example of this: Rather than let it simply sit as a strange revival of the original, she gave the remix an official release and added verses by 070 Shake and Fireboy DML, sharing videos for each.

Free Radicals rarely practice subtlety. Founded nearly a quarter century ago, the Houston collective have released nine albums' worth of brash, unfiltered musical mayhem, encapsulating the essence of their city's superlative diversity with a sound that fuses funk, jazz, ska, reggae, klezmer, hip-hop, and countless other styles the world across.

Shaudy Kash is a Detroit rapper who loves (in no specific order) fine women, R&B samples, and good weed. His conversational flow makes every song sound like one of your homies recounting a wild ass week where they ended up messing around with a whole friend group.

Wendy Eisenberg adds depth to everything they touch. Whether it's the refreshingly abrasive edge they bring to their folk-adjacent, jazz-based solo songs or the dissonant earth tones they add to their free improvisation with legendary experimenters such as John Zorn, they have a knack for making fresh tracks in well-trodden soil.

Listening to an artist's demos is very sensitive to context. No matter how much I love hearing Prince finding his way through a song on collections like Originals and Piano & A Microphone, the fact that these albums were released without the famously controlling artist's expressed permission can make hearing them feel like an intrusion.
