Guy Lodge Film Critic You have to admire the moxie of authors and filmmakers who set their science-fiction spectaculars in the very near future, essentially confronting viewers with what may seem a pretty outlandish forecast for their own lives. Those that pull it off present us with possibilities resonant enough to ponder, even when they’re too far-fetched to actively fear: So it proves in “Restore Point,” a sharp, high-shine sci-fi outing from the Czech Republic, in which earthly life after death is routine, a cellular rather than spiritual matter. Set in an unspecified (though Czech-speaking) central Europe in the year 2041, director Robert Hloz’s whopper of a calling-card debut may offer a more credibly subdued, budget-constrained visual of the mid-21st century than the lavishly built “Blade Runner 2049” — unless we’re in for a drastic design (r)evolution over the course of the 2040s — but its ideas are sky-high in concept. Marrying glossy mainstream genre aesthetics to probing, elaborately conceived speculative storytelling, this is a notably ambitious and auspiciously well-realized first feature for Hloz: the kind that appears to be flaunting his capabilities for even bigger international and Hollywood assignments.
A sci-fi comedy by Mel Eslyn and a literary noir by Alice Traughton – who are, respectively, the longtime producer for the Duplass brothers, and an award-winning U.K. television director (Dr. Who, Cucumber, The Living And The Dead) — debut in limited release this weekend, alongside Adele Lim’s Joy Ride, a Lionsgate wide-release – marking first-time feature film debuts by three women.
Suede have reflected on their first gigs together as a band, recalling how: “For the first three years, we just weren’t very good.”In the latest instalment of NME’s Firsts video series, frontman Brett Anderson and bassist Mat Osman looked back at the first gigs they ever played.“When I was first in a band with Mat, we were in a band called Geoff and it was me and Matt and this guy called Gareth Perry. We got a gig at Clair Hall which was in Haywards Heath and you [Mat] couldn’t make it so it was literally me and Gareth and it was just terrible,” recounted Anderson. He continued: “I had this really really tricky 12-string that the action was really high, I couldn’t really play it.
Thania Garcia Drake and 21 Savage delivered a jam-packed setlist for the opening night of the “It’s All A Blur” tour that launched at Chicago’s United Center on July 5. The show marked Drake’s first concert stretch across North America since the “Aubrey & the Three Migos” tour hit over 40 arenas in 2018. Drake opened the concert sitting on a couch where he recited “Look What You’ve Done,” a cut from his 2011 album “Take Care,” while reading the lines off of a composition notebook. A younger version of Drake (there’s online debate regarding whether or not the boy is a hologram or if he’s real… it appears to be an actor whose face they’ve digitally altered on the venue’s jumbo screens) regularly appeared beside him for songs released earlier in his discography.
