Zack Sharf Digital News Director Sheryl Crow recently spoke to the BBC and slammed artificial intelligence being used in the music space to bring back the vocals of dead artists. She specifically called out Drake for using AI to recreate the voice of late rapper Tupac on his Kendrick Lamar diss track “Taylor Made Freestyle” in April. The song was ultimately pulled after Tupac’s estate threatened to sue Drake.
“You cannot bring people back from the dead and believe that they would stand for that,” Crow told the BBC. “I’m sure Drake thought, ‘Yeah, I shouldn’t do it, but I’ll say sorry later’. But it’s already done, and people will find it even if he takes it down.” Crow added on an even more pointed note: “It’s hateful.
It is antithetical to the life force that exists in all of us.” Drake used AI to recreate vocals from Tupac and Snoop Dogg in “Taylor Made Freestyle.” In the aftermath of the song’s release, Tupac’s estate sent a cease-and-desist letter to Drake, and estate litigator Howard King said the estate was “deeply dismayed and disappointed by [Drake’s] unauthorized use of Tupac’s voice and personality” in the song. “Not only is the record a flagrant violation of Tupac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time,” his statement added. “The Estate would never have given its approval for this use.” Crow has long been outspoken against the use of AI in music.

Thania Garcia There are many surprising elements to Camila Cabello‘s transitional fourth LP, “C,XOXO.” After dominating pop radio as a solo act with “Señorita” and “Havana,” Cabello’s new effort has her testing new territories that range from glitchy hyper-pop to trap-imbued club tracks. One of the most defining factors of the album has been its features: JT and Yung Miami (who have since called it quits as “the City Girls“) on “Dade County Dreaming”; PinkPantheress on “Pink xoxo”; Playboi Carti on the album’s lead single “I Luv It;” and Lil Nas X on the sultry “He Knows,” among others. Most striking of all are the pair of Drake features — “Hot Uptown” and “Uuugly” — that arrive in the throes of his loss to Kendrick Lamar.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Kevin Costner recently joined his “Horizon: An American Saga” cast for a live recording of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, and he said his planned four-movie saga differs from many Western films that have come before in that its female characters “drive the story in every plot line.” Costner, who co-wrote the franchise with Jon Baird, said he “couldn’t conceive of a scene that didn’t involve a woman” while shaping the story. “Horizon” chronicles the journey of several characters during and after the Civil War as they settle the American West. Kevin Costner stars in the film opposite a sprawling ensemble cast, which includes Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, Isabelle Fuhrman, Abbey Lee and Ella Hunt.

Sheryl Crow isn’t a fan of AI, and she’s made her thoughts on Drake‘s use of the technology clear – see what she had to say below.Earlier this year, during Kendrick Lamar’s and Drake’s rap feud, the latter released a diss track aimed at Lamar, titled ‘Taylor Made Freestyle’, which featured the AI voices of late West Coast rapper Tupac, and Snoop Dogg. Now, in a new interview with the BBC, Sheryl Crow has spoken out against the use of AI in music, and Drake’s ‘Taylor Made Freestyle’ in particular. She described the technology as a “slippery slope” and “a betrayal” that “goes against everything humanity is based on”.Crow revealed that she was first introduced to AI sometime last year when she came across a songwriter who had generated John Mayer‘s vocals for a track: “I know John and I know the nuances of his voice.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director “The Sopranos” star Drea de Matteo was interviewed on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime” (via Mediaite) and said she’s got a target on her back in Hollywood because she’s an actor who does not endorse Joe Biden for president. The Emmy-winning actor went on to say there are “a lot” of “quiet” Donald Trump supporters in Hollywood, suggesting they won’t go public with their support out of fear of being similarly criticized for going against Biden. “Is there a quiet Trump voter out there in Hollywood?” host Jesse Watters asked.

Drake is facing a lawsuit after clothing brand Members Only alleged tour merch he sold infringed upon their company trademarks. In a case filed on Tuesday (June 12), it was claimed that Drake’s company, Away From Home Touring Inc., had been selling shirts that read ‘Members Only’ on the recent ‘It’s All a Blur‘ Tour. The words seemingly reference his track ‘Members Only’ from 2023 album ‘For all the Dogs’ and are not imitations of the recognisable Members Only racer jackets that made the brand popular in the 1980s.However, Members Only lawyers have said (via Billboard): “The fact that ‘Members Only’ is a song on Drake’s album ‘For All the Dogs’ does not obviate the likelihood of confusion or give [Drake] a license to use our client’s ‘Members Only’ marks in such a confusing manner, particularly on or in connection with apparel items.”They continued: “Away From Home’s use of ‘Members Only’ … is likely to cause confusion, mistake, and deception among consumers as to the origin of Away From Home’s infringing T-shirts.”Per Billboard, representatives for Drake have not yet responded to a request for comment. This is the latest legal battle facing the Canadian rapper, who recently was dismissed from lawsuits relative to Travis Scott‘s 2021 Astroworld festival disaster.

Shaheem Reid The fans congregating outside of the Kia Forum in Inglewood, CA on Wednesday afternoon before Kendrick Lamar’s Juneteenth concert — dubbed “The Pop Out” and headlined by “Ken & Friends” — seemed more like they were waiting for the 1985 NBA Finals game between the Lakers and Celtics than a hip-hop concert. While Lamar was obviously getting the overwhelming support from his home city, like Magic Johnson did during the “Showtime” Lakers’ run, Drake was getting Larry Bird-levels of disdain, and he wasn’t even in the building.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Sabrina Carpenter revealed to Rolling Stone that Jack Antonoff worked with her on about half of her upcoming sixth studio album, “Short N’ Sweet.” The longtime Taylor Swift collaborator produced and co-wrote Carpenter’s latest hit single, “Please Please Please.” Despite working closely with Swift since “1989” and producing acclaimed albums from Lorde, Lana Del Rey and more, Antonoff’s name often evokes outrage on social media from critics who slam him for having a monotonous production style that has seemingly ruined their favorite artists. Such backlash went viral after the release of Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” earlier this year, but Carpenter has blunt words for the haters: “Fuck them all.” “Fuck them all,” Carpenter repeated.
