Shakira Honored as Billboard’s First Latin Woman of the Year

Shakira will be honored at Billboard’s Woman of the Year at the brand’s first-ever “Latin Women in Music” two-hour music event.
The 46-year-old musician is being honored for her musical accolades and creating opportunities for Latin women in the industry. Shakira has sold more than 95 million records worldwide, making her the top-selling Latin woman artist of all time.
“Shakira is the ultimate Woman in Music. Thanks to her, Latin women all over the world have been empowered to write and perform deeply personal music,” Leila Cobo, Billboard’s chief content officer for Latin/Español, said.

“She created a movement all on her own, and continues to be more relevant than ever today, with grace, a deep tradition of giving back, and enormous talent. She is the definition of a Woman in Music,” Cobo continued.
Shakira has been named Billboard’s Top Female Latin Artist of the Decade twice and has received three Grammys.
The two-hour music special will take place on May 6 at the Watsco Center in Miami, and will air on May 7 at 9pm on Telemundo and Universo.
At just 18, she created the Pies Descalzos Foundation which over time has raised over 40 million dollars and impacted more than 150,000 children and nearly 900,000 families.
