A sewage leak in the River Tay near Stanley was caused by a blocked pipe backed up with toilet waste.
After initially saying the system was working as it should - despite a video showing dirty water flowing into the river from a displaced manhole cover and a blocked filter - Scottish Water later confirmed the issue.
The debris blocking a treated water outlet led to all manner of unpleasant discharges into the Tay at Stanley Mills on July 10 and the following days.
Stanley residents Brooke Labagh and Chris Rynn filmed ducklings feeding along a river bank littered with ‘unflushables’ that had escaped when a pipe backed up.
With fellow outdoors lover Nicola Murray, the couple highlighted the mess, uploading a video of escaping waste just by the waterside on Twitter.
Scottish Water promised to fix the situation after initially saying all its plant equipment was working to plan.
Commenting, Scottish Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser said: “This has been a very concerning sewage incident in the River Tay, beside Stanley Mills, and must be alarming for local residents – some of whom swim in the water there from time to time.
“I contacted Scottish Water upon hearing about the awful matter, and they have now confirmed that the problem was caused by a blockage found within a section of the sewer there. They have stated that their staff are working hard to remove this obstruction.
“I hope this problem is fixed timeously and I can assure residents that I will be keeping an eye on the situation to try to ensure that we don’t see a repeat of this problem.”
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We attended after receiving reports of a discharge in the River Tay near the Stanley Waste Water Treatment Works.

Kerry Washington is opening up about her mental health.
Kerry Washington is looking back on some of the formative experiences and long-hidden traumas of her childhood in her emotionally charged new memoir, In an excerpt from Washington's forthcoming book — published by — Washington recalls the vitriolic fights her parents used to get into when she was a child, and how the fear and stress from their bitter battles impacted her own young mind.«From what I remember, most of my parents’ fights were about money, and about the fact that neither of them felt like they were in the marriage they wanted to be in, or more precisely, that they were married to the person they wanted to be married to,» Washington recalls in her book. The celebrated actress explains that her parents «both harbored deep disappointment over what their lives had become» and would scream at one another with deeply held anger. However, it was also important to them to keep face around their kids and other families.«We pretended to ourselves, to each other, and to the outside world that our family was not suffering the pain of life’s disappointments,» Washington writes, explaining that her parents would often save their brutal bickering for when she was asleep, wrongly believing that insulated her from the tension between them.«As a young child, I would lie in bed and listen for signs of how serious each battle was and when it might come to an end… I developed panic attacks at night,» Washington writes, saying that the panic attacks began when she was only seven.«They manifested first as a rhythm of anxiety that encircled my brain, then evolved into a rapid pulsing, a whirling frenzy of metallic thumps, like those nauseating old spinning rides at a county fair,» she recalls.

Taylor Swift and her fans caused a small earthquake during her Seattle concerts of the Eras Tour. The movement at Lumen Field on both nights was likely caused by a combination of the sound from the concert combined with the dancing and jumping by her fans, seismologists told The New York Times.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour wasn’t creating enough of a groundswell, Swifties caused such a ruckus during the Seattle, Washington leg that they generated the equivalent of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake — rivaling the legendary “Beastquake” of 2011.“This was much bigger,” Western Washington University geology professor Jackie Caplan-Auerbach told King 5 after comparing the tectonic activity. The groundbreaking phenomenon occurred over the weekend while the “Antihero” singer had performed sold-out back-to-back shows to over 144,000 fans at Lumen Field, the Seattle Times reported.Little did the Grammy winner know that her concert would prove earth-shattering in the seismic sense: The activity from the three-and-a-half-hour marathon caused quite a commotion on a seismometer located next to the stadium, which prompted Caplan-Auerback to conduct a study to see if it surpassed the previous Lumen record caused by the Beastquake. For those unfamiliar with Seattle sports lore, this seminal event occurred in 2011 after Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch scored a touchdown and fans went wild.To see how the two events compared tectonically, Caplan-Auerback first analyzed data from the two Swift shows.
