Serena Williams and Venus Williams fell in the opening round of doubles at the 2022 U.S. Open on Thursday (September 1) in Flushing, New York.
The superstar sisters lost to 37-year-old Lucie Hradecka and 17-year-old Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic in a final score of 7-6 (5), 6-4. Earlier this month, Serena announced her intention to “evolve” from tennis, meaning that this doubles loss was likely her last doubles match.
“Playing against the Williams sisters is a special moment for everybody, any time,” said Linda. “I was really lucky that I could pair with my doubles partner and we could win and put up a good fight.”
Added Lucie: “We played [each other] for the first time. I think we did a very good job,” she told the Ashe crowd. “I’m so sorry for you that we beat them, but we are so happy that we did it!”

According to Venus, it was Serena’s idea to play doubles.
“She’s the boss,” Venus said this past week to ESPN, “so do whatever she tells me to do. I don’t think we have played since 2016, but might be getting that wrong.”
Serena will play Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday night (September 2) for a spot in the singles Round of 16.
