Self-isolation period in Scotland won't be cut from seven days, insists Humza Yousaf

There are no plans to cut the self-isolation period for those with covid in Scotland from seven to five days, Humza Yousaf has insisted.
The SNP health secretary said it had already been risky for Scotland to reduce its isolation period from ten days to seven.
It comes as Tory minister Nadhim Zahawi backed a proposal to drop England’s quarantine period from seven days to five.
Yousaf said: “The reason why we have made that decision – and it’s important to say that the UK nations all moved at a different pace on this – is that it’s not a risk-free option.
“It’s not that there isn’t a risk attached with going from ten days to seven days, there is a risk. It’s just that we wanted time to consider whether or not we would, inadvertently, for example, accelerate the transmission of the virus by cutting that isolation period.”
The Scottish Government came under considerable pressure from businesses when self-isolation rules in England were reduced from ten to seven days and last week Nicola Sturgeon announced that Scotland would move into line with the rest of the UK.
But Yousaf insisted there wold be no further reduction despite the example of the United States moving to a five day quarantine .
He and ministerial colleagues were “intending to keep that matter under review, but we’re not contemplating at this stage going from seven days to five”.
He added: “It’s not something we’re contemplating, we’ve literally just made the change from 10 days to seven days. I think it’d be sensible to see the impact and the effect of that. But, clearly, we’re always guided by the science.”
Meanwhile, the UK government has dismissed reports that the availability of free lateral flow tests is to be scaled back.
