Multiple fire crews have worked together to rescue a woman from a balcony fire inside a flat in Edinburgh.
Emergency services descended upon a block of flats in Cables Wynd in the Leith area of the capital at around 4pm on Wednesday November 2 following reports of burning on a balcony of the building. Four fire engines and a height vehicle attended at the incident at Cables Wynd House, popularly known as the Banana Flats because of the building's curved shape.
One woman was rescued from the apartment by fire crews and passed into the care of Scottish Ambulance Service paramedics to be treated for undisclosed injuries. Photographs of the scene shared with our sister site Edinburgh Live showed more than 15 firefighters and a Police Scotland van parked outside the unique building.
The street was closed off with yellow tape as emergency services carried out the rescue operation.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 4.05pm on Wednesday, 2 November to reports of a fire affecting a balcony on the second floor of a ten-storey block of flats on Cables Wynd, Edinburgh.
"Operations Control mobilised four appliances and a height vehicle to the scene to extinguish the fire and make the area safe.
"One female casualty was handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service."
The Banana Flats are well known in Edinburgh as the home of Sick Boy in Irvine Welsh's iconic novel Trainspotting. They were given A-listed status because of their unique design in 2017.
