A lucky Scots hillwalker has been plucked to safety after spending more than 24 hours trapped on a tiny cliff ledge without any phone signal.
The 72-year-old man found himself stuck in the tricky position just inches above the waterline in the Kinloch Hourn area of the Highlands around midday on Sunday, May 21.
After spending a night on the rocky cliff face, the walker eventually managed to get a weak signal on his mobile and raised the alarm with HM Coastguard.
An RNLI team from Kyle of Lochalsh Lifeboat were tasked shortly before 1.30pm on Monday and raced to the man’s last known location.
The stuck walker was able to see the lifeboat in the distance but was too far away to catch the attention of the search crew.
Due to the remoteness of the area, rescue crews were struggling to communicate with their partner agencies as a result of the ongoing signal issues.
The man was eventually located at around 7pm and taken back to Kyle where he was reunited with his relieved family.
A spokesperson for Kyle RNLI said: ‘This gentleman is an experienced walker who had unfortunately become trapped in an impossible situation, unable to go forward or back.
“Due to the location, he had no mobile signal from the time he had become trapped until Monday lunchtime, when he noticed he had a very weak one.
“He was then able to get in touch with the emergency services who launched a search and rescue operation. We regularly train with other rescue agencies and by working well with everyone involved, we were able to return him back to his family safely.”
