A busy Scots railway line will reopen next week after a huge sinkhole appeared under the tracks.
The colossal fault, stretching one metre deep, emerged last week between Caldercruix and Drumgelloch in North Lanarkshire. It forced the cancellations of numerous trains throughout the central belt as engineers from Network Rail were called to repair the damage.
It is thought that the sinkhole was caused by an underground spring. Images from the scene show the ground beneath the tracks split in half by the huge hole.
After almost a week of repairs, the operator has confirmed that the line will reopen on Monday. The final step of the restoration works will take place tomorrow and will see the line tamped by engineers.
Tamping is the equivalent of shaking your duvet out - it settles and aligns the track, ready for trains to run. Aerial images show the section of tracks closed off by workers as they reconstructed the ground.
Network Rail has also shared footage of the tamping process. It shows the arms of a tamper digging into the track to manipulate and push the stones underneath the sleepers.
This process helps to raise or lower the height of the track.
A statement from Network Rail reads: "A snap from Caldercruix by our Air Ops team. We'll reopen Airdrie-Bathgate on Monday.
"The final step tomorrow is tamping - the railway equivalent of shaking your duvet out, it settles and aligns the track, ready for trains to run."
Ross Moran, Interim Route Director for Network Rail Scotland, said: "Sinkholes like this are very unusual on the railway, and our specialist geotechnical engineers are working tirelessly to identify the cause, as well as planning the repairs, so we can reopen the railway."
