The Justice Secretary has denied playing politics with the wrongful convictions of subpostmasters despite blaming Westminster for the absence of Scots legislation to quash convictions.
Angela Constance admitted her government could introduce emergency laws to end the misery for many falsely sentenced for stealing due to the Post Office’s dodgy Horizon IT system.
Victims last night urged her to stop blaming Westminster and take action. But in an interview the Sunday Mail she claimed introducing a law in Scotland would delay justice for victims.
Constance said: “The root cause of all this is Horizon Post Office technology that has tainted criminal cases across the UK. A UK-wide solution would have been the quickest and most simple solution to pursue.”
Asked if her government was playing politics, Constance said: “No. The Scottish Government has focused on the facts of what the root problem of this miscarriage of justice is. Quite simply we want it to be addressed as quickly as possible, therefore we put aside matters of politics for the sake of a pragmatic and quick solution to deliver justice as quickly as possible.
“If the UK Government continues to refuse to change its mind, we’ll be a step behind in delivering justice for those affected in Scotland.”
