A health worker who stabbed herself outside a hospital before claiming she had been attacked has been convicted of wasting police time.
Donna Maxwell denied staging the incident outside the Ailsa Hospital in Ayr in November 2018. But a jury found the 47-year-old, from Irvine, guilty by majority after a trial at Ayr Sheriff Court.
The horror incident sparked a huge police response and an innocent woman - who has since died - later appeared in court before being cleared of any involvement.
Maxwell continued to insist she was the victim of a random attack during a four-day trial.
Her attempts to dodge justice came undone when the court saw CCTV footage of her buying a knife in Tesco that matched the blade she would go on to thrust into her own body.
Maxwell told the court the accusation she had stabbed herself was 'completely untrue'. She also told the jury how she had been confronted by her alleged attacker before being stabbed.
The trial heard evidence Maxwell had bought a Go Cook kitchen knife from Tesco in Irvine with a serial number that matched the blade.
Stricken Maxwell convinced colleagues who ran to her aid that she had been ambushed and knifed at the facility, which specialises in mental health, psychiatry and addictions.
James McGoldrick, who served as a detective sergeant in Police Scotland's cyber crime unit, told the trial police analysed Maxwell's phone.
Data showed Yahoo searches for 'woman's anatomy' and 'woman's anatomy diagram', which had been deleted by a user of the device.
He told the court police were unable to tell when the pages had been accessed or deleted.
Searches for 'claim compensation' on the UK Government's website and 'claim compensation if victim of crime', were also found in the web history.
