The "wettest" cities in Scotland have been revealed in new research, with two claiming the top spots for the whole of Great Britain.
After a long winter and a poor start to the spring, the whole of Scotland has been experiencing wet weather in recent weeks. However, according to a new study by Betfair Slingo, some parts of the country are more prone to rain than others.
Looking at data from Met Office weather stations active in 2023, the experts put together a list of the 10 wettest cities in Great Britain. According to the study, Edinburgh comes in at number one with 1421.97mm of estimated rainfall recorded last year.
Famous for its wild and unpredictable weather, the Scottish capital is known for regularly seeing rainfall. Umbrellas, raincoats, and wellies are a common sight in the city even during the summer months.
Following behind in second place, with 1359.71mm of estimated rainfall in 2023, is the town of Ayr. Scotland made numerous other appearances in the top ten, with Perth claiming the number four spot with 1255.14mm of rainfall and Glasgow following behind in fifth with 1219.06mm.
Meanwhile, the Welsh capital of Cardiff landed in third place with 1267.85mm of rainfall in 2023. Elsewhere, London is notably absent, but it appears that the south coast of England is a prime location for rain — with Exeter and Truro placing in sixth and seventh respectively.
The research also looked at the top 10 wettest cities in Great Britain across the whole of the last decade between 2013 and 2023. According to the experts, it is still Scotland that dominates — taking up the entire top four spots.
