A 12-year-old school boy has tragically died after his electric scooter collided with a bus during the morning rush hour. The youngster was riding the vehicle past a McDonald's in Birmingham at around 8am on Tuesday, when he was fatally struck by the bus.
Police have confirmed that the boy died at the scene and that his family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers, the Mirror reports. Two ambulances and two paramedics raced to the scene at Bordesley Green in Birmingham in an attempt to save the boy who has not yet been named.
West Midlands Ambulance Service reported that the child was in "critical condition" with life-threatening injuries that he sadly passed away from before reaching a hospital. No passengers travelling on the bus required treatment after the crash and detectives from West Midlands Police have spoken to several people who were onboard.
Officers are urging any witnesses with any information or dash cam footage to come forward while they examine the scene which has now been cordoned off. A spokesperson for the force said: "A boy has sadly died after a collision involving a bus in Birmingham today.
"The 12-year-old is believed to have been riding an e-scooter when he collided with a bus on Bordesley Green, near to the junction with Belchers Lane, just before 8am. He was sadly confirmed dead at the scene.
"The road remains closed this afternoon while our investigators work to establish what happened. The youngster's family has been told, and are being supported by specially trained officers."
Det Sgt Paul Hughes, of the serious collision investigation unit said: "This is an awful tragedy for the young boy's family and friends, and our thoughts are with them at this time.
