Shoppers at Sainsbury's say they have found their bags being the subject of "close inspections" after they have checked out using the self-service tills.
Customers have taken to social media recently after they found their bags being checked by staff members when they leave the store and wanted to highlight the issue to others.
As reported by the Mirror, one shopper took to networking service Nextdoor to share their experience and wanted to know if others had experienced the same issue after their bags were checked on their last three visits to the supermarket.
They wrote: "I’ve used self-scan since it started and have had my bags checked maybe twice in all that time until this week. The last three shops I’ve done at Sainsbury’s in Surbiton Basin have been checked, including a close inspection of my bag and sun hat. I know this is random – well, I assume it is random – but is shoplifting on the rise at Sainsbury’s and other shops? Their staff are helpful, products are good, my nearest shop too so this isn’t a rant. I just wondered if there is a problem?"
According to the Telegraph, other shoppers responded to the original post to explain that they had also experienced similar inspections when using the self-service tills recently.
A Sainsbury's spokesperson told the Daily Record: "We have a range of security measures in place and we have not changed our bag check policy."
This is not the first time that the supermarket chain has come under fire by customers for its security measures that have been adopted in certain stores across the UK.
The Daily Record reported back in December last year that select Sainsbury's stores had installed receipt scanners for any shopper who had used the self-service till.
