SAG Awards: Actors Whose Casts Are Also Nominated Are Twice as Likely to Win

It’s not a huge surprise, but still not good news for SAG, TNT & TBS. The one-hour pre-taped special for the 27th annual SAG Awards on Easter Sunday drew 957,000 total viewers across the TNT and TBS simulcast, according to Nielsen, less than half of last year’s viewership of over 2 million on the cable channels. Sunday’s broadcast drew a .11 rating on both TNT & TBS.

Four actors made Screen Actors Guild Awards history on Sunday after being the first people of color to sweep the top four categories in film acting.  The SAG Awards are a closely watched Oscar harbinger. Actors make up the largest branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and SAG winners often line up with Oscar ones.

The Crown continued its winter awards season reign at the 2021 SAG Awards, winning two prizes: best actress in a drama series and best ensemble in a drama series. The series went into Sunday night nominated for best ensemble in a drama series, male actor in a drama series (Josh O'Connor) and female actor in a drama series (Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin).

Viola Davis won best actress in a film for her lead role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom at the 2021 SAG Awards. In her acceptance speech, Davis thanked the film's cast, including the "beautiful" Chadwick Boseman; director George C.

The  27th Screen Actors Guild Awards saw the best of onscreen performances, in TV and film, receiving recognition. The one hour pre-taped show awarded actors across 15 various categories with individual as well as ensemble acts being awarded.

Since the pandemic, awards shows have been contained in Zoom chats and other virtual spaces. That said, the red carpet has also become virtual and allows Hollywood talent to come up with inventive ways to show off their red carpet fashions. For the SAG Awards, the virtual red carpet portraits contained many elevated looks, giving some sartorial eye candy on social media.

Instead, that prize went to Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, possibly bolstering its chances at the Academy show on April 25th.
