Damon Albarn working on new opera, despite being “a complete idiot” when it comes to the genre

Damon Albarn has revealed that he is currently working on an opera, putting Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe’s ‘The Magic Flute Part II’ to music for the first time.Von Goethe started writing the libretto for a sequel to Mozart’s 1791 opera in the mid-1790s, which he then published in 1807. But it was never actually completed or set to music, a task Albarn has now taken on more than 200 years later.“I’m doing an opera at the moment, using Goethe’s fragment he wrote about ‘The Magic Flute Part II’, which is fascinating”, he explained on a new episode of the Broken Record podcast. “You’ve heard of Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’? Well, Goethe, who is a contemporary of Mozart, wrote ‘Part II’ of that – the sequel – but it never got put to music.

‘The King Who Never Was’ Director on Reconstructing the Murder Investigation Involving Italy’s Last Heir — and Her Connection to the Case

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Unlike in the U.K., Spain and Sweden — where kings and queens are still formally heads of state — Italy’s royal family, the House of Savoy, no longer rules. The last heir to the Italian throne, Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy and his family were forced into exile in 1946, when the prince was 9. That year, the Italian people voted in a referendum about whether the monarchy should continue. They chose to create a republic and punished the royals for failing to save their country from Mussolini’s fascist regime. The Savoys were allowed to return in 2003 after 57 years of exile. In 1978, Vittorio Emanuele – the king who never was – got into trouble while he and his wife and kids were living on the island of Cavallo, on the south coast of Corsica, France. As reconstructed from eyewitness interviews in a new Netflix documentary, on a hot August night he became enraged when some loud “shitty Italians” “borrowed” the dinghy off his yacht and tied it to another nearby boat. Fuming, he took a rifle, went to one of their boats and, after shots from his rifle rang out – that were just meant to scare – someone got hurt. Dirk Hamer, a 19-year-old sleeping on another boat nearby, died of gunshot injuries in early December. Though it was never legally proven that Vittorio Emanuele killed Hamer, this incident had a big impact on the prince’s life.

‘Biosphere’ Review: An Imperfect Yet Endearing Indie Comedy About the End of the World

Dennis Harvey Film Critic In the diverse annals of survivalist cinema, one lesson is clear: Death is surely preferable to an eternity (or even 95 minutes) spent trapped with the inimitable duo of Pauly Shore and Stephen Baldwin in 1996’s “Bio-Dome.” By contrast, the dystopian-future-style living is pretty easy to take in “Biosphere,” given the more amiable company of stars Sterling K. Brown and Mark Duplass. They play besties stuck for the long haul in a self-sustaining habitat after some murky catastrophe has rendered the world outside lethal.  This first directorial feature for producer Mel Eslyn (who co-wrote with Duplass) is a somewhat uneven construct that at times threatens to exhaust its bro-comedy goodwill. But ultimately the performers are winning enough, and the ideas in the ambiguous story intriguing enough, to achieve an end result of successful middleweight charm and substance.

U.K. Media Regulatory Body Chief Clarifies Position on Politicians Doubling Up as Newsreaders: ‘Our Rules Ensure Strict Safeguards’

Naman Ramachandran As three separate investigations involving serving politicians also acting as newsreaders are underway, Melanie Dawes, chief executive of U.K. media regulator Ofcom, has clarified the body’s position on the matter. In an article originally published in the Telegraph and subsequently on the Ofcom website on Tuesday, Dawes wrote: “The Broadcasting Code is clear that serving politicians cannot be a newsreader, interviewer or reporter in any news program, unless there is an exceptional editorial justification. And in those exceptional cases, their political allegiance must be made clear to the audience. News programs will usually involve newsreaders directly addressing the audience, and may include reporter packages or live reports, with a mix of video and reporter items.”

Jeremy Clarkson’s Meghan Markle Column Was Sexist, U.K. Media Regulator Rules; The Sun Forced to Print Ruling on Front Page (EXCLUSIVE)

Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International The U.K.’s media watchdog, the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), has upheld two complaints lodged by women’s rights charities against Jeremy Clarkson’s December column in The Sun about Meghan Markle. Variety can reveal that after a months-long process, IPSO found that the “Grand Tour” host’s column breached Clause 12 of the regulator’s Editors’ Code of Practice, which relates to discrimination. The case marks the first time in its nine-year history that IPSO has upheld a complaint on the basis of sexism. As a result, The Sun has been instructed to publish a summary of the regulator’s findings in the spot where Clarkson’s column regularly appears in the print edition, and reference the decision on its front page and website homepage for 24 hours — something the tabloid hasn’t been forced to do since 2016, when its front-page “Queen Backs Brexit” splash was found to have breached press regulations.

Welcome to the ‘Taylor Swift Economy’: Swifties spur boom in global concert tourism

a second chance to secure tickets and a once-in-a-lifetime summer vacation abroad.Even within the US, desperate devotees have trekked across state lines to see their favorite artist perform the sensational three-hour show, creating an explosion in concert tourism.Welcome to “The Taylor Swift Economy.”“Every weekend, the city that she visits releases the data around hotel occupancies and just the amount of money generated for each local economy — and it’s in the millions,” Callie Cox, a financial analyst for investment company eToro, told The Post. “Taylor Swift, if you take a step back, is selling out stadiums for multiple nights in a row, booking out hotels in every city that she goes to, and commanding an obscene price for tickets,” she continued. In Pittsburgh, an estimated 24,000 hotel rooms were booked at “premium” prices by Swifties making the Eras Tour pilgrimage this month for the record-breaking show, while tourists drummed up more traffic than usual for local businesses, from parking garages to restaurants. Not to mention, fans are shelling out top-dollar for themed outfits to humble brag on social media. In fact, compared to that of a Steelers game, Pittsburgh Swift fans “generated 20% or 25% more in revenue” and record-breaking food sales for local hotspots.Dan Fleetwood, the president of QuestionPro Research and Insights, said that the economic impact of Swift is larger than dozens of countries, as the Eras Tour is estimated to generate $5 billion alone.“If Taylor Swift were an economy, she’d be bigger than 50 countries; if she was a corporation, her Net Promoter Score would make her the fourth most admired brand, and her loyalty numbers mimic those of subjects to a royal crown,” he said in a statement.
