Rupert Grint’s praise for his work in the psychological horror series Servant has been well-deserved — just ask his costars.
‘Harry Potter’ Stars Reuniting Over the Years
“He’s such a beautiful actor,” Lauren Ambrose, who plays Dorothy Turner, the sister of Grint’s Julian Turner on the Apple TV+ drama, exclusively told Us Weekly. “I love watching him in this character. It’s just the energy he brings and the timing and the comedy. And the heart that he brings to this character is really inspiring. I just love the brother, sister scenes that can be so tender. … Those are always really a nice color, really different to play and fun.”
Servant debuted on the streaming service in 2019 and is currently in its third season. The M. Night Shyamalan-created show also stars Toby Kebbell and Nell Tiger Free, who joked that her “tender” scenes with Grint, 33, are “slightly different” on screen. Nell’s Leanne Grayson and Julian have since found themselves in an entangled physical relationship as she continues to live under Dorothy and Sean Turner’s (Kebbell) roof in Philadelphia.
“I get on so well with Rupert that when it does come to the more romantic scenes for us, it is pretty difficult for us to keep a straight face. I think the first time we shot a kissing scene, we went over by maybe two hours because of how much we were laughing. It got ridiculous. It’s like two kids being dared to kiss in the playground,” Free, 22, recalled to Us of the Harry Potter star. “But as far as his acting goes, he is really phenomenal. And he’s just got so many different strings to his bow. You see him pulling off incredibly emotional scenes and then he’s, like, the funniest guy in the room and then he can be this almost romantic lead. Rupert’s brilliant.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans EditorIn the best visual effects Oscar race, the underdog is Shawn Levy’s “Free Guy.” Despite being set in a virtual world, the film was made for $100 million with an even smaller budget for VFX. But that didn’t prevent the film’s visual effects supervisor Swen Gillberg from delivering some of the best VFX sequences this year, as Ryan Reynold’s character Guy is thrust into the world of Free City, a “Grand Theft Auto”-inspired gaming world.“Free Guy” is an easter egg treasure trove, but perhaps the biggest is the nod to Captain America, Star Wars and the Hulk.

Chris Willman Music WriterCelebrity comebacks don’t often go exactly as planned, but it helps when the planner is someone with as much of a knack for military precision and as broad a sense of the big cultural picture as a Rick Rubin or a Brandi Carlile. Rubin, of course, built Johnny Cash from a casino-playing relic back into some kind of god with the records he produced for the Man in Black in the ’90s and 2000s, and Carlile had the idea she could do something like that with her own personal heroine, Tanya Tucker, in 2019.

Dennis Harvey Film CriticA perfect movie for the moment — though it debuted in late 2020, winning the Grand Prize at Tallin Black Nights — “Fear” offers both seriocomic balm and finger-wagging just as another major refugee crisis roils the world. Bulgarian theater and film veteran Ivaylo Hristov’s latest feature brings to mind not just current Ukraine-related events, but wider European and global trends, as it depicts a border backwater rattled when a lonely local widow takes in an African man fleeing war.
