A number of unconfirmed reports have circulated about Lucy Letby's first few days at HMP Low Newton. Some of these have claimed that she was subject to a brutal attack at the hands of another prisoner.
Posts on social media have shared rumours masquerading as news articles, complete with identical posts which read: "BREAKING NEWS. Baby killer Lucy Letby has been attacked in Prison. Reports have suggested that she was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being slashed and boiled kettle water with sugar thrown in her face. (sic)"
According to the Mirror, these posts have been shared thousands of times despite being flagged as "false information". One of those sharing the rumours has even claimed to have "officially validated" that the 33-year-old murderer "now suffers from partial loss of vision in her left eye" and has a "non-life-threatening cut on her neck" following the alleged attack.
Full Fact, a team of independent fact-checkers who analysed the posts, explained that it wasn't uncommon for misinformation to spread when it comes to high-profile criminals. Similar rumours have previously been spread about Sarah Everard's murderer Wayne Couzens, as well as Thomas Hughes, the father who killed his six-year-old son, Arthur Labinjo-Hughes.
The fact checkers also say that the claims that the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) confirmed the posts about Letby were false. When contacted by the Mirror, the MOJ declined to comment.
Experts believe Letby will be on suicide watch for the next couple of months after being given a whole-life sentence. They say it will be months before she is integrated with her fellow inmates. Due to the nature of her crimes, she is believed to be at a high risk of being targeted by follow cons.
