Box Office: ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Stumbles With $60 Million Debut, ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ Flops

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” lassoed the top spot on domestic box office charts, collecting an underwhelming $60 million in its opening weekend. That’s a decent amount of money for a tentpole that’s aimed at older audiences, but “Indiana Jones 5,” one of the most expensive movies ever, cost $295 million before marketing. It’ll take a heroic feat, one that would test even an enduring legend like Indiana Jones, for the fifth installment in the decades-old franchise to become profitable in its theatrical run. It was a disappointing weekend at the box office as “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” a $70 million-budgeted family film from DreamWorks and Universal, cratered in its sixth-place debut with $5.2 million. In addition to “Dial of Destiny” and “Ruby Gillman,” the DC superhero adventure “The Flash” tumbled to the No. 8 spot in its third weekend of release with $5 million, another embarrassing 67% drop. It has yet to cross $100 million domestically, with ticket sales at $99.2 million to date.

Paramount+ With Showtime Premium Tier Debuts to Fortify Paramount Global’s Platform Strategy: ‘Streaming Is a Scale Game’

Cynthia Littleton Business Editor Go big and go broad – that is Paramount Global’s strategy as it formally raises the curtain Tuesday on the Paramount+ With Showtime premium tier on the company’s primary streaming platform. Paramount+ will begin offering its new top tier of service that now encompasses Showtime’s large library of content for $11.99 per month. That’s up $2 from the previous top-end Paramount+ package. But it’s less than the cost to consumers today for both services, even with Paramount’s previous discounts for those who subscribed to both services. The company’s ad-supported Paramount+ Essential Plan (without Showtime) is going up from $4.99 to $5.99 per month.

‘John Early: Now More Than Ever’ Review: The Queer Comic Skewers How His Generation Behaves Online

Murtada Elfadl From the pre-credits screen that implores audiences, “This film should be played loud bitch,” “John Early: Now More Than Ever” announces itself as a very gay show. The comedian’s most comfortable and funniest speciality is using gay vernacular mockingly. At just over an hour in length, his first HBO special is a fleeting and sharp dissection of how Early’s “generation” behaves or misbehaves, particularly online. Known for his pairing as a writer with comedian Kate Berlant and for his role in TV’s “Search Party,” Early has amassed a devoted following without achieving mainstream stardom … yet, at least. He should have broken out as an actor. His small but memorable part as the best friend of the lead character in the 2016 movie “Other People” hinted at a casual and comfortable presence on screen. The role ought to have led to more parts toeing the line between comedy and drama. Now, in a project more reflective of his stand-up persona, Early shows a confrontational and restlessly physical presence. Whether singing covers of artists such as Britney Spears or telling jokes, making faces, pointing and dancing, the comic holds our attention.

‘Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed’ Review: Doc Twists Classic Clips to Illuminate Closeted Star’s Private Life

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic During his lifetime, Rock Hudson was a model for American masculinity. That changed after his death, when the strapping, straight-acting (but occasionally sensitive) hunk from Winnetka became the poster boy for Hollywood homophobia: a closeted star who’d been forced to play a role his entire career that wasn’t true to himself, on screen and off. “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed” treats that compromise as a tragedy, leaning on the fact Hudson died of AIDS to underscore the injustice, but Stephen Kijak’s documentary does him a disservice, reducing Hudson’s career — in exactly the way he went so far out of his way to avoid — to the dimension of his sexuality. Built around interviews with a handful of former lovers and friends, Kijak spills private details from Hudson’s personal life, ranging from whom he shagged to how he arranged such trysts in the first place. A secretly recorded phone call reveals Hudson to be a “size queen,” audibly excited by the prospect of meeting a tall, well-endowed stranger. The whopper — which underscores the kind of salacious gossip Kijak gravitates toward in the film — comes from Joe Carberry, who recalls, “Rock had a sizable dick, but he tried to put that thing up my ass, and I couldn’t do it.”
