Filmmaker Ruben Östlund has made a career for himself by taking fairly simple ideas and turning them into incredibly entertaining, funny, and often wild features. Best of all, it feels like you don’t know what you’re in for every time you sit down and view one of his films.

“Mr. Creosote” scene from 1983’s “The Meaning of Life.” That’s exactly how Östlund intended it: movie scene as wild, sustained roller coaster ride for adults. The film, which centers on the relationship of two models (played by Harris Dickinson and the late Charlbi Dean) won Östlund his second Palme d’Or at this years Cannes Film Festival, one of the very rare comedies to score the fest’s top prize.
