Zack Sharf Digital News Director Robert Downey Jr. is not closing the door on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which he kicked off in 2008 with “Iron Man” and headlined for 11 years through 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Iron Man met his demise in that tentpole, but that has never stopped rumors from circulating that Marvel is trying to bring Downey back into the fold, especially now that the MCU has hit a box office rough patch with 2023 flops such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels.” Certainly, Downey’s return as Iron Man could restore Marvel to its blockbuster glory days. Speaking to Esquire magazine after his Oscar win for “Oppenheimer” last month, Downey was asked if he would ever return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that he is officially an Academy Award winner.
The actor didn’t hesitate to answer yes. “Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA,” Downey said.
“That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet.
He’s the house. He will always win.” Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, told Vanity Fair last December that Downey’s Iron Man will not return as it would ruin his perfect exit in “Avengers: Endgame.” “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige said at the time. “We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.” Asked about any new Marvel offers during an interview in January on Rob Lowe’s “Literally!” podcast, Downey responded: “Not just yet.” Elsewhere during his Esquire cover story, Downey’s longtime Marvel co-star Gwyneth Paltrow remembered how he would just throw out lines of dialogue before each day of filming on the “Iron Man”

If The Marvel Cinematic Universe wobbled in 2023 because of the poorly received ‘Ant-Man 3’ “The Marvels,” and “Secret Invasion” series, many might argue part of that is the loss of its big stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johannsson in the post “Avengers: Endgame” universe. All three of their characters, Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow, respectively, either died or were essentially taken off the battlefield (Captain America came back from his time travel exploits as an old man).
Robert Downey Jr. might be willing to suit up again as Iron Man in another Avengers movie. However, two Marvel directors are not so sure about that.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Robert Downey Jr. elated Marvel fans earlier this month when he told Esquire magazine that he would “happily” return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Tony Stark/Iron Man following his Oscar win for best supporting actor in March.

There is so much going on in Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel “The Sympathizer” that it would take a team of true craftsmen even to attempt to unpack it in episodic form. HBO is lucky they hired one of the best in Park Chan-Wook, a supremely and undeniably talented director.

We’re in a weird place culturally in Hollywood. Will Iron Man return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The verdict is still out. Since Iron Man’s tragic death in "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), Robert Downey Jr., who played the character over a span of 11 years, has been asked time and time again if he’d return to the role if the opportunity presented itself. Very shortly after his character’s departure from the MCU, Downey appeared on "The Joe Rogan Experience," where Rogan took the opportunity to ask the actor if he would ever return to the role he played for so long.
