A promised scheme to improve a road junction for traffic close to the huge Logistics North development is ‘no longer necessary’, Bolton Council have said. When planning permission was granted for the industrial park back in 2014 there was requirement put on Harworth Group, who operate the site, to improve two nearby road junctions to cater for more traffic.
The road projects were earmarked at Four Lane Ends and the junction of Plodder Lane and Watergate Lane. The work to Four Lane Ends has been completed but no improvements have been carried at the second location.
A modification to the agreement to improve the junction is set to go before Bolton’s planning committee this week.

An officer’s report, said: “Since Logistics North has been occupied and generating traffic it has been noted that the Plodder Lane and Watergate Lane junction has operated at a capacity less than that predicted at the time the planning application was being assessed and which influenced the design of the improvements.
“Therefore, an increase in the vehicular capacity of this junction is not necessary to accommodate Logistics North’s traffic.” Instead, Bolton Council have suggested amended road changes which would provide the current standard infrastructure for cyclists using the junction.
The work, which has been estimated to cost £395,000 would mean the removal of disused bus stops on Plodder Lane, kerb realignment to provide a wider carriageway to Watergate Lane, a two metre wide cycle path on the eastern approach on Plodder Lane and a new foot path and grass verge on the western side of Watergate Lane from the junction to the existing cycle and pedestrian path further south.
