posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. That fan is correct: “Riverdale,” which is based on the Archie comics and began as a show about small-town teens in high school, did, in fact, end with the reveal that Archie (KJ Apa), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) were in a four-way polyamorous relationship in which they were all dating each other.
A QUAD? #Riverdale pic.twitter.com/mgISGL3GltBefore the series finale, there was a fair amount of couple-shuffling: Veronica began dating Betty’s crush, Archie, in the first season, causing Betty to move on with Jughead instead (as their actors dated in real life). Then, Betty ended up with Archie in later seasons, and, after the quad relationship was revealed during the finale, she was shown sharing a smooch with Veronica, too — thus implying the four-way romance.
Reggie (Charles Melton) was not involved in this foursome romance, much to his dismay. Ever since it premiered on The CW in 2017 – and launched its young cast into stardom – “Riverdale” has been packed with crazy plot points, such as Archie ending up in teen boy prison fight clubs and randomly getting attacked by a bear, a cult leader trying to harvest people’s organs and escape on a rocket, a stick-monster known as “the gargoyle king,” a character talking to her dead brother’s body as if he was alive, and time travel.
The show’s source material may be classic, but the bonkers “Riverdale” was not your father’s Archie comics. But even after all those wild plot points, it seems like the series finale revealing a foursome relationship was too much, for some fans.

has told a lot of wild stories involving time travel, multiple universes, supernatural forces and more generally surreal weirdness than one might expect from a teen drama on The CW.However, when the long-running series came to a close on Wednesday, the show wrapped everything up with a somber, emotionally powerful and surprisingly heartfelt story in which essentially everyone died. Or, more accurately, everyone was already dead when the finale began.Essentially, the show kicked off in the present day with an 86-year-old Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) sitting at home, where she reads in the newspaper that Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) had died at the age of 84.Soon, however, she gets a visit from Angel Jughead, who magically transports her back in time to the 1950s, to Betty's last day of senior year in high school, which she originally missed because she was sick at the time.Strolling around her old high school, Angel Jughead gives Betty the chance to get closure with all of her old friends, and details the sometimes wonderful, sometimes tragic lives of everyone she'd been friends with back in the day.Through the use of Jughead's omnipotent divine narration, fans got to find out the life stories of all the characters they'd followed throughout the series, and the emotionally charged finale came to a close with Betty's peaceful death — after which, as an angel, a youthful Betty meets with all her friends in the afterlife, which just so happens to be a classic-looking Pop's Diner in all it's glory. In celebration of 's series finale, ET is looking back at recent interviews with the cast, regarding the show coming to a close and how they feel about wrapping up the wild storylines.
