Richard Rankin has praised his Rebus cast mates, dubbing them 'incredible company' as the Scot gets underway with filming season one of the show.
Rankin, who plays Roger MacKenzie in the hit time travel drama Outlander, will adopt the role of Inspector Rebus in a brand new series of the detective series.
The reboot of Rebus was announced in March, with Rankin selected for the main role.
The 40-year-old will follow in the footsteps of actors such as John Hannah, Ken Stott, Brian Cox, Ron Donachie and Charles Lawson in portraying Rebus, with Taggart star John Michie most recently playing him in a brand new play written by creator Ian Rankin.
Rankin started his career in the BBC Scotland sketch show Burnistoun alongside Robert Florence and played supporting roles in TV dramas The Replacement and Trust Me.
He said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on the role of Rebus. I’m a big fan of the series and Sir Ian Rankin. I feel very lucky to be given the honour of bringing such an iconic Scottish character back to TV screens and will give all I have to do it justice.”
The reboot will have him at a "psychological crossroads" following an altercation with an infamous Edinburgh gangster, with it being a newly written tale.
Sir Rankin added: "Rebus has been a big part of my life for a long time now and to work with Gregory Burke to create a new story that sees him navigate life as a younger man in a contemporary (and ever-changing) Scotland has been a truly fascinating process.
"I’m very much looking forward to watching Richard bring the character to life – he’s the perfect fit for the role, and not just because we coincidentally share the same surname!”
