Hulu's adaptation of High Fidelity is a curious love letter to send on Valentine's Day. As fans of Nick Hornby's 1995 novel or the 2000 movie starring John Cusack already know, the narrative follows Rob, a record shop owner who can't see that his neuroses — like his obsession for cataloging music — are ruining his relationships.

It is worth remembering, particularly right now, that High Fidelity was never just a story about record store nerds ranking their days away. Part of what made Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel such a hit, leading to a 2000 movie adaptation, was its uncensored view into the psyche of stunted, self-pitying, supposedly sensitive straight men who obsess over stuff.

If HBO’s “Girls” characterized a certain type of young, disaffected millennial, fumbling cluelessly around a gentrifying Brooklyn, and if “Sex and the City” used Manhattan as a tantalizing playground for a class of well-connected, glamorous and decidedly 90s-bound women, both shows had one thing in common: they were painfully, inevitably white.

Like mother, like daughter! Zoë Kravitz already had a special connection to High Fidelity before signing on to the new Hulu series, which made the job feel like even more of a perfect fit.
