‘Rebecca’: Ben Wheatley’s Hitchcock Riff Is A Pale Iteration Of A Classic Gothic Horror

There have been many adaptations of Daphne Du Maurier's 1938 classic Rebecca and Netflix is the latest to bring the horrors at the Manderley estate back to life. The romantic thriller starring Lily James and Armie Hammer from Director Ben Wheatley follows a young newlywed who moves to her husband's lavish estate, but finds herself battling his sinister housekeeper and the haunting shadow of his late wife, Rebecca.

Ben Wheatley is at a very interesting crossroads in his career. In the past week, Netflix released his latest feature film, “Rebecca,” which is a remake of a film from Alfred Hitchcock and finds the filmmaker working in the realm of thrillers.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for the designers behind Rebecca — Netflix's adaptation of the classic 1938 novel (which became an Oscar-winning 1940 film) — was finding one house that could fill the role of Manderley, the estate of Armie Hammer's aristocratic character, Maxim de Winter, and where his second wife (played by Lily James) comes to live.
