Homeowners have been warned about giant swimming rats that are sneaking into houses through toilets. Some of the rodents are said to be "as big as cats" and they are treading water in the sewers before picking their moment to invade homes.
Experts are warning people to rat-proof their properties in a bid to keep the vermin out. But it is becoming more difficult, with an estimated 150million rodents in the UK at the moment, the most ever.
Pest control expert Ian Helands has said rats are "getting bolder and bolder" as he warned people to remain vigilant, Daily Star reports.
He said: “I have had more call-outs than ever from homeowners who have heard a noise, looked down into their toilet only to find a giant rat. No-one is safe.
"Rats are excellent swimmers with bendy bones and can squeeze into the smallest of spaces. They can hold their breath for three minutes and tread water for three days, and they are coming up waste pipes.
“They’re cunning and getting bolder and bolder. Basically, if they want to get into your home, they will.”
The explosion in rat rat rates is causing chaos across the country, with the vermin population growing year on year following the coronavirus lockdowns.
Mr Helands, who runs Sussex pest control business Pests Be Gone, suggested that the increase in people working from home means that there isn't as much food waste in city centres now, so rodents are brazenly making their way into homes.
He said: “[The numbers have] increased by 25 per cent each year over the Covid pandemic. People are scared and they should be. There are more rats than ever and they are taking over. I have seen some the size of cats.”
Mr Helands continued: “There are ways of pest proofing your home. You can get rat gates for water
