Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Chances are, you know someone like “Quiz Lady” Anne Yum. As played by Awkwafina, this socially awkward young woman works a boring CPA job by day, doing her best to blend in with the gray walls of her cubicle.
But every evening at the same hour, Anne tunes in to her favorite game show and becomes a star — even if her flatulent old pug, Mr. Linguini, is the only witness — as she answers every question quickly and correctly.
The kind of comedy perfectly suited to the comfort of one’s own couch (thank you, Hulu), Jessica Yu’s “Quiz Lady” is the story of how, with the help of her outrageously extroverted older sister, Jenny (Sandra Oh), Anne overcomes her anxiety and agrees to appear as a contestant on “Can’t Stop the Quiz.” So what if she trips up in front of idol/host Terry McTeer (Will Ferrell) when she finally reaches the set of her beloved show? The movie isn’t nearly as concerned with whether or not Anne wins — although screenwriter Jen D’Angelo (“Hocus Pocus 2”) comes up with a pretty funny idea for the game’s charades-based final round — as it is with mending all the broken connections in her family life. Anne’s the daughter of Korean-immigrant parents.
Dad walked out in her tween years, leaving the poor kid to form an unhealthy fixation on bow tie-clad cornball McTeer in his absence. Rebellious Jenny was older and already more independent when their parents split (best to ignore the age difference between Awkwafina and Oh and concentrate on their comedic chemistry instead), leaving home to seek her fortune.

Spamalot opens on Broadway tonight, and it’s safe to say the Middle Ages haven’t been this funny since, well, the last time Spamlot opened on Broadway nearly 20 years ago. Perfectly cast and splendidly performed, with Josh Rhodes’ deceptively no-frills direction (and choreography) placing the irresistible goings-on front and center, the revival has lost none of the smart-dumb charm of either the original musical or its great source of inspiration – the beloved 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Caroline Brew editor SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers for “Quiz Lady,” now streaming on Hulu. The premise of Jessica Yu‘s “Quiz Lady” seems like the perfect recipe for an over-the-top, slapstick comedy: two estranged sisters — the uptight Anne (Awkwafina) and the unhinged Jenny (Sandra Oh) — embark on a cross-country roadtrip to cover their mother’s gambling debt. And there are plenty of moments throughout the film that live up to that absurdly hilarious premise, such as Anne tripping on Jenny’s pills while trying to answer quiz questions as Harry Styles’ “Watermelon Sugar” plays.
Quiz Lady director Jessica Yu is opening up about Paul Reubens‘ cameo in the film, which marks the late actor’s final film role.
Former Love Island star Laura Anderson would be the first to admit that the early weeks of motherhood have looked very different to how she'd once imagined them. The 34 year old, who welcomed her baby daughter Bonnie with Gary Lucy in September, split from the ex Hollyoaks actor in early 2023, shortly after publicly announcing the pregnancy. While there were a few attempts to get back together and Gary, 41, was by her side throughout the labour, they are no longer a couple. “I wanted nothing more than for us to be a family and to be together, but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out,” said Laura, who previously spoke out about her fears of being a single mum.
Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Ultra-prolific writer-director, fiercely independent producer, pioneering entrepreneur, self-made studio chief. Any and all of these labels apply to Tyler Perry, though the one he chooses for himself is “Maxine’s Baby” — the same moniker that documentary duo Gelila Bekele and Armani Ortiz opted to give their motivational profile of the boundary-obliterating multi-hyphenate, who comes off disarmingly humble for someone who’s achieved so much.
On the heels of the wonderful 2019 The Two Popes, in which Anthony Hopkins starred as Pope Benedict XVI in an imagined conversation with Jonathan Pryce’s future Pope Francis, Hopkins is once again involved in the same kind of cinematic historical fictional meeting as founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, who is engaged in a private debate with The Chronicles of Narnia author and theologian C.S. Lewis (played by Matthew Goode) on the existence of God. As with The Two Popes, there is no proof whatsoever that any meeting ever took place, but it clearly provides lots of material to wrap your head around. That is exactly what Mark St. Germain did in creating his 2009 play Freud’s Last Session, which was built on the 1967 Harvard lectures of Dr. Armond M. Nicholi Jr in his presentation “The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life.”

It wouldn’t be that time of year without a new Lifetime-looking Xmas movie to warm your heart a little bit. Is it a movie, is it a film, or is it content? It’s hard to say, but Netflix’s “Best Christmas Ever” releases globally on Netflix on November 16, and it looks a bit standard-issue, tbh.
