Queen Elizabeth died at Balmoral Castle in September 2022 and, according to reports, the late monarch always knew Scotland was where she'd spend her final hours.
As royal expert Katie Nicholl reveals: "It was actually her wish to die at Balmoral."
According to Nicholl, Elizabeth's cousin, Lazy Elizabeth Shakerley, revealed in an interview in 2020 that the Highlands estate was where the late Queen felt most at peace, reports Page Six.
“I think [her] actual death was very peaceful,” the author of New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown explains.
She added: “She went to sleep and she died in her bed in Balmoral. That has always been very, very special to her. And thank goodness it was such a peaceful passing for the Queen.”
According to Nicholl, a hospital room in Aberdeen had already been set aside for the late Queen, but thankfully was not needed in the end.
The longest-reigning British monarch died aged 96 peacefully at Balmoral Castle on September 8, 2022, surrounded by family.
The castle was originally purchased by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, in 1852 and has long held a special place in Elizabeth's heart.
The late Queen spent a lot of her childhood at the impressive Aberdeenshire estate, which spans 50,000 acres.
Balmoral was also special as it's where Prince Philip proposed in 1946.
It was a place Queen Elizabeth could work but also have a semblance of private life, enjoying barbecues and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
