The Prince of Wales has pulled out of attending the memorial service for the late King Constantine of Greece at Windsor Castle on Tuesday 27 February due to a personal matter, Kensington Palace has announced. Now that Prince William has bowed out, Queen Camilla is taking over and will lead a royal party at St.George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
While Kensington Palace did not give further detail on the reason for William's decision, it was confirmed that the Princess Of Wales continues to be doing well following her recent abdominal surgery.
The late King Constantine of Greece was William's godfather, with King Charles sharing a close friendship with him. Constantine’s father, King Paul, was a first cousin and sailing partner to the late Prince Philip.
The Prince of Wales called the Greek royal family who are attending the service to let them know he was unable to attend. He was due to give a reading during the event, but instead, Prince Pavlos, King Constantine's son will do this.
Her Majesty Queen Anne-Marie, former Queen of the Hellenes will also join Camilla for the service. William's wife, Kate, underwent abdominal surgery in January, with William initially taking time off while she was in the hospital to help look after both her and their children; George, 10, Charlotte, 8, and Louise, 5.
While William has since returned to work, Kate is away from official royal engagements until after Easter following the major surgery, where she was treated in the same hospital as her father-in-law King Charles. Among other royal events the Princess looks set to miss are St Patrick's Day (in her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards), Commonwealth Day, ANZAC day and the Royal Family's Easter service.
