A woman from Ayrshire has recently told her story about how her and her baby's lives were saved by quick-thinking medics when suffering from pre-eclampsia.
The condition was initially mild, but became progressively worse and eventually the woman, named Maxine Phillips, gave birth to her child 11 weeks early via C-section. While she says the pre-eclampsia got worse after the birth, keeping her in hospital for nine days, Maxine recovered and has since completed the Edinburgh half-marathon.
Her child, now two-years-old, has exceeded all expectations according to her mother and was allowed to go home weeks before her term date.
Maxine, who is a NHS nurse, told Ayrshire Live : "She was in for six weeks and she went from strength-to-strength and we did have hiccups along the way but she recovered from that. We were really proud of her."
This may leave some mums-to-be with questions around pre-eclampsia and its warning signs. So here are symptoms as well as key facts around the condition.
Pre-eclampsia is a condition that affects only pregnant women. Although it's not clear what causes the condition, the NHS say it's thought to occur when there's a problem with the placenta, the organ that links the baby's blood supply to the mother's.
The condition happens in about one in 10 pregnancies and can be more likely in your first pregnancy. It can cause blood pressure to rise in those affected and can develop into life threatening seizures.
It can put both a mother and baby at risk, although in most cases pre-eclampsia is mild. The condition may also have long-term effects on a mother such as high blood pressure, stroke or heart disease in later life.
According to Scotland's NHS Inform, these are the symptoms that may mean you have
