Editor’s Pick: Landmark Theatre’s Pride Retro Replay

Brokeback Mountain, the “Retro Replay: Film Classics” series picks up two days after Capital Pride with the 1995 flamboyant star-studded comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar.Essentially an American remake of the global box office smash and Oscar-winning Australian comedy The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Beeban Kidron’s To Wong Foo starred a trio of male action stars — Wesley Snipes, the late Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo — improbably portraying New York City drag queens. We follow along as the trio sets out on a road trip to Tinseltown only to find themselves stuck in a homophobic hinterland after their old Cadillac convertible breaks down.Soon enough, they ride into the sunset, leaving behind a winsome message about the value of community and acceptance. Local drag queen Noxeema Jackson, named for the Snipes character, and the QTBIPOC collective, will be orchestrating some surprises at the screening.

The Partnership: How Steve Martin, Martin Short & Selena Gomez Became A Triple Threat For ‘Only Murders In The Building’

Death certainly becomes Hulu thanks to Only Murders in the Building, a 10-episode comic mystery starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as three inhabitants of a New York City apartment complex who team up to investigate the death of a neighbor. Co-created by Martin and Jonathan Hoffman, the star-filled drama returns June 28 on the streamer, and now Gomez’s acerbic Mabel has become a murder suspect. Here, Gomez joins Martin (who plays Charles, an outmoded TV actor) and Short (his Oliver is a bankrupt Broadway producer) to riff about the dramedy’s successful first season, those intimate moments on screen, and what it’s like to work with each other. (Hint: it’s a constant knee slapper.)

Police Agree To End Stings In NYC Bus Terminal Bathrooms, Will Pay $40,000 In Damages

The Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) has agreed to stop sending plainclothes officers to the Port Authority Bus Terminal men’s restrooms in order to arrest gay, bisexual, and gender nonconforming people and falsely accuse them of public lewdness and exposure. The PAPD has also agreed to pay a total of $40,000 in damages to the two men who were part of a federal lawsuit over their arrests. As part of the agreement before a federal court, PAPD said they will also include LGBTQI sensitivity training for all new recruits. “This settlement represents an important victory for our clients, Cornell Holden and Miguel Mejia, who bravely fought to end the Port Authority Police Department’s discriminatory and, frankly, downright creepy practice of surveilling men the officers believed to be gay while using public urinals and falsely arresting them for public lewdness,” Molly Griffard, Staff Attorney at The Legal Aid Society, said in a statement. Kicking off #PrideMonth with a victory in our lawsuit challenging bias-based false public lewdness arrests.
