A police watchdog is to investigate a complaint made by a woman about the treatment she received in custody at a Greater Manchester station. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it received two referrals from the force on July 26 regarding allegations made by the woman about her detention at Pendleton police station in Salford in February 2021.
It comes after three women accused the force of unjustified strip searches. Last week, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham said he was in discussions with Dame Vera Baird KC and would be asking her to look at the care the women received after they were arrested.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods previously confirmed allegations relating to one woman were the subject of an ongoing investigation and that two referrals had been made to the IOPC. The police watchdog has confirmed it received a report in May last year and instructed GMP to investigate the matter locally.

The section’s out-of-competition opener reconstructs the legend of this film that was passed down from the elders to the new Kuna generation, but never made it to the screen. Gaisseau, a French explorer and filmmaker who won an Oscar in 1961 for the doc “The Sky Above, the Mud Below,” lived with the Kuna people on a Panamanian island for a year and filmed their most intimate ceremonies. He then promised to return with the film, but never did. He ran out of funding and a bank confiscated his reels, which Peyrot unearthed 50 years later.
