Police custody inquiry extended as more people come forward following complaints about GMP

An inquiry into the treatment of women and girls who have been arrested and taken into police custody in Greater Manchester will report its findings in the new year. The inquiry by former national victims commissioner Dame Vera Baird KC was launched by mayor Andy Burnham and his deputy in August following a Sky News investigation into the experiences of three women in custody at GMP.
Focusing on strip searches, intimate searches and clothing removal and replacement, the inquiry was due to report its findings this autumn. However, more people have come forward since the inquiry launched, including men who have shared 'similar experiences'.
Deputy mayor Kate Green told council leaders at a Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) meeting today, that the findings of the inquiry are now expected to be published in February. She said: "I know you were as shocked as the Mayor and I were at what we saw in that news investigation, which is why we acted swiftly to establish the Inquiry. It is vital that the public have confidence in our custody arrangements, and that anyone who has been arrested is treated with dignity, particularly in cases of strip searching.
