A pilot has conducted research into the most effective methods to prevent babies from crying on planes. While one of his suggestions is somewhat controversial, the other has been proven to significantly soothe infants.
Air travel with babies or toddlers can be a nerve-wracking experience, particularly when they cry and parents are unsure how to comfort them. The pressure changes during takeoff and landing can cause discomfort for many passengers. While adults and older children can alleviate this by chewing gum or swallowing to pop their ears, babies cannot.
As a result, they often cry in response to the pain, which can also be distressing for their parents.
However, according to Jimmy Nicholson, a Sydney-based pilot who also featured on The Bachelor Australia in 2021, there are ways to "stop your baby crying on a plane". In a recent TikTok video, he claimed to have "done the research for you" by consulting "a ton of mums", and discovered two techniques that "work".
However, he cautioned the second method was somewhat "out there".
Describing why flying can be uncomfortable, Jimmy explained: "As an aircraft increases altitude, gases in the body expand like when you release a balloon. When you descend, the gases need to leave your body. They exit through your ears, your nose, or your bum. Us adults, we can swallow, chew gum, do the Valsava [a breathing technique that can unclog your ears], which helps get rid of the gases inside your body."
Those who have babies are given a gem of advice. When travelling by air, "Number one, breastfeed on descent. Apparently it works. It helps the baby do a Valsava. The sucking and swallowing motion gets rid of trapped gases in their ears and sinuses," said Jimmy.
