Piers Morgan has defended Will Smith after he slapped Chris Rock on stage during Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony in Hollywood.The presenter, 56, admitted he felt “moved to defend” the actor and criticised what he calls “an overly sensitive snowflake society”. Will, who won an Oscar for his role in King Richard later that evening, took offence to comedian Chris’ joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith and climbed on stage to slap the Oscars host before returning to his seat.
Now, Piers has insisted that he also would have felt compelled to protect his wife once he noticed she was hurt by the apparent mocking of her alopecia. "And whilst I don’t condone violence, Will Smith didn’t punch him. It was just a slap, that Rock shrugged off with good humour." The former Good Morning Britain host added that the actor should be “saluted” for defending his wife and not criticised by a “snowflake society”.
Piers continued: “He was standing up for his wife, the woman from whom he blew off the dust when she was going through a rough time, and said he was going to make shine, and created a safe space for her to get healthy and to grow and define herself. "In previous eras, he’d have been saluted for defending his girl, not savaged by an overly sensitive snowflake society." Following Sunday’s shocking incident, Will has since issued an apology for the altercation, saying he’s sorry to Chris, the Oscars, and those watching at home.The 53 year old took to his Instagram feed to share a statement,
