The first Sudanese film ever to screen in Cannes official selection, “Goodbye Julia” is the story of two women — one from the North, the other from the South — who are brought together by fate in a complex relationship that attempts to reconcile differences between northern and southern Sudanese communities in the currently war-ravaged country.

Professor Sprout Actor Miriam Margolyes Says ‘Harry Potter’ Series ‘Wasn’t Important’ to Her: ‘It’s Not Charles Dickens’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Miriam Margolyes’ acting career includes a BAFTA-nominated role in Martin Scorsese’s “The Age of Innocence,” “Reds,” “Mulan,” “Call the Midwife” and a lot more, but it’s her appearance as Professor Sprout in two “Harry Potter” movies that have made her a recognizable face across the world — not that Margolyes cares too much for the beloved franchise. Speaking to Vogue UK for a new profile, Margolyes acknowledged that her two “Harry Potter” movies introduced her to an entire new generation of young people but said the franchise “doesn’t mean as much to me as it does to them.” “For me, ‘Harry Potter’ wasn’t important,” Margolyes said. “I was very glad I got the part and I enjoyed being in it and meeting all the people, but it’s not Charles Dickens.”

‘Club Zero’ Review: Jessica Hausner Mines Straight-Faced Body Horror From An Eating Disorder Cult [Cannes]

Cults and eating disorders warp the mind much in the same way: they convince the individual that their behavior is special and vital, that everyone else can’t see themselves or the world clearly, and that any external opposition only proves the effectiveness and power of their behavior. In her grueling new film “Club Zero,” Austria’s most fearless button-pusher Jessica Hausner fuses the two into a trajectory of slow-moving, inexorable body horror as primly buttoned-up as the lemon-lime polo shirt uniforms selected by her costume-designer sister Tanja.

Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International British writer Martin Amis, the author of the book “The Zone of Interest,” has died at 73. News of his death comes just one day after the big-screen adaptation of his 2014 novel premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews. The New York Times reports that Amis died of esophageal cancer, as confirmed by his wife, the writer Isabel Fonseca. Amis published 15 novels over the course of his career, a number of which were adapted. Jonathan Glazer’s treatment of Amis’ chilling Nazi drama “The Zone of Interest” is one of the buzziest premieres to come out of Cannes so far. The film follows the family of a high-ranking SS officer that lives next door to Auschwitz concentration camp.
