Council staff missed two opportunities to stop a colleague wrongly telling people they needed to take ID and proof of their address to polling stations to vote in last year’s general election.
The erroneous advice was posted on the council’s Facebook page a little over 15 hours before polling stations opened on December 12.
It said: “You can still vote if you do not have your polling card, just bring along ID and proof of address.”
The same message was posted again on the council’s Twitter account
