The indie film confab Zurich Summit took place Saturday as the marquee industry event alongside the Zurich Film Festival. More than 100 film pros took part in the all-day session that drilled down into the state of the industry.

In a cosmopolitan lineup, titles pitched include international co-productions such as “Whalemen (At the Ends of the Earth)” from “Everest” director Baltasar Kormákur as well as the latest from “Amama” helmer Asier Altuna and “Raqa,” from Gerardo Herrero, an Academy Award wining producer for “The Secret in Their Eyes.”
Brent Lang Executive Editor of Film and Media“All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” Laura Poitras’s new documentary about artist and activist Nan Goldin, has sold to Neon. The indie studio acquired the film before it was scheduled to make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It has also landed prominent spots at the Toronto Film Festival and the New York Film Festival, where it will get the centerpiece slot.
NEON has acquired rights to the Participant Laura Poitras docu All the Beauty and the Bloodshed which will hit theaters this fall followed by an ancillary and digital release.
Aretha Franklin documentary Amazing Grace, which tells the story of the singer’s 1972 gospel album, is subject of more legal issues.
Neon, the independent film distributor behind Oscar winners “Parasite” and “I, Tonya,” is assessing options for its financial future.The New York-based company has tapped the investment bank Raine to explore a sale of some or all of its business. The move comes as Neon looks to expand its distribution business internationally and consider opportunities in television and streaming.

Manori Ravindran International EditorNeon has acquired the North American distribution rights to Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera,” starring Josh O’Connor and Isabella Rossellini.Written and directed by Rohrwacher, the film is set in the 1980s in the clandestine world of the tombaroli (tomb robbers) and tells the story of a young English archaeologist (O’Connor) who gets caught up in the illegal trafficking of ancient finds.The cast also includes Carol Duarte, Alba Rohrwacher and Vincenzo Nemolato. The film has wrapped phase one of production in Tarquinia and southern Tuscany and will continue in August and September in central Italy and Switzerland.The film is produced, as all of Rohrwacher’s previous films, by Carlo Cresto-Dina with his company Tempesta and long-time backers Rai Cinema, in co-production with Neon, Amka Films (Switzerland) and Ad Vitam Production (France), and in partnership with Arte France Cinema, Canal+, Ciné+, RSI/SSR SRG (Switzerland) and French distributor Ad Vitam.

Under his leadership, the studio has grown its recent production slate with director Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo,” starring Hunter Schafer; Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The End,” a golden-age musical with Tilda Swinton; Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool” featuring Alexander Skarsgård.
Neon has promoted Jeff Deutchman to be its new president of acquisitions and production, Tom Quinn’s arthouse distributor announced Tuesday. Deutchman has been with Neon since its founding five years ago, and in that time he has been instrumental in landing some of the distributors biggest acquisitions, including last year negotiating deals for “The Worst Person in the World,” “Flee,” “Spencer,” “Pig,” “Memoria” and “Petite Maman.” Deutchman also helped to grow Neon’s production slate, launching projects such as Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer, Joshua Oppenheimer’s musical “The End” with Tilda Swinton, Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool” starring Alexander Skarsgård and Ben Wheatley’s horror film “In the Earth,” which was one of the first fully completed productions of the pandemic.“Jeff has been here from the beginning and is a big part of Neon’s success; his taste and his instincts are simply impeccable.

Neon said Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Memoria starring Tilda Swinton will begin its tour of U.S. cinemas starting April 1. The distributor announced last year that the film — which opened in late Dec. for a one-week Oscar qualifying engagement at NYC’s IFC Center — planned to pursue an unusual release strategy it calls a “cinemas only…forever” tour.
