France Overhauls Oscar Submission Committee

The decision to reform France’s Oscar commission stems from criticism over the submission of films which had premiered at Cannes but did not have the best chances of earning an Oscar nomination and going far in the race.

The Julia Roberts Cannes Interview: ‘History Gets So Easily Rewritten in the Masculine Form’

Julia Roberts climbed to the top of the stairs at Cannes’ red carpet last week, festival director Thierry Frémaux whispered in her ear: “You made it with your shoes on.” This was, for Roberts, a first — the last time she hit the world’s most glamorous red carpet, promoting “Money Monster” in 2016, she’d intentionally abandoned her stilettos. At the time, the press speculated that Roberts bared her feet as a political statement, given that Cannes has a history of mandating that women wear heels, not flats, at the gala premieres. Was she trying to send a message? “I’ll leave it to everyone to decide for themselves,” Roberts says.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau ChiefThe question arising at every Cannes Film Festival lineup announcement about why the festival has not selected films from a particular country tends to irk chief selector Thierry Frémaux. But this year, with films from China notable by their absence, Frémaux may be asking himself if he messed up, or whether bigger forces are at play?Last year, Cannes was at pains to conceal its selection of Hong Kong pro-democracy film “Revolution of Our Times” until as late as possible, in order not to alert mainland Chinese authorities or disrupt the other Chinese indies showing in the festival.China experts differ as to how much Cannes’ defiance last year was a factor in this year’s de facto boycott.
