He plays a hot-shot pilot in Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” which is getting a lot of early buzz ahead of its May 27 release, and he’s sticking to military roles for the Korean War action-drama “Devotion” that also has Jonathan Majors (“Lovecraft Country“) leading it.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) and Adria Arjona (upcoming Father of the Bride) have signed on to star in the upcoming action-comedy Hitman, from Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater (Boyhood). AGC International is launching international sales on the pic at Cannes and will co-rep domestic rights with CAA Media Finance and Cinetic.

Powell will play an undercover cop who disguises himself as a hitman to catch individuals attempting to order assassinations. When the cop discovers a woman (Adria Arjona) who is desperate to escape her abusive boyfriend, he breaks protocol and risks his cover to save her. Linklater and Powell previously worked together on the 2016 college comedy “Everybody Wants Some!!’ and this year’s animated SXSW film “Apollo 10 1/2,” which is now streaming on Netflix.

Richard Linklater’s “Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood” reflects one of the director’s childhood fantasies, informed by growing up in South Texas, a stone’s throw from Johnson Space Center, at the time NASA was trying to do the impossible. “Houston, we have a problem,” he playfully imagines the organization’s top scientists saying, “We accidentally built a lunar module a little too small.” Ergo, they need a 10 1/2-year-old to go up in Neil Armstrong’s place.As someone slightly younger than Linklater who also spent his formative years in Texas, it’s impossible to overstate how much I adore that premise and the collection of associations it brings up for the “Boyhood” director.
