“Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has a lot of options for what he could make next, and one of them could be his long-gestating “Cleopatra” movie based on the Stacy Schiff novel “Cleopatra: A Life” for Sony Pictures (he has a couple of options, one of them being a third “Dune” movie too). Before that, however, some may remember the era when filmmaker David Fincher had a version of the movie set up at Paramount, circa 2012, that would have starred Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie  (long before the competing Gal Gadot incarnation with Patty Jenkins and Kari Skogland).

Fifth Season owner CJ ENM has a new scripted chief in the U.S.

Valerie Wu editor Elsie Choi, a film and TV development veteran who has worked for such producers as Dan Lin and Bruce Willis, has joined Los Angeles-based CJ ENM America as executive VP and head of scripted TV. CJ ENM is a South Korean entertainment company that has produced content such as Oscar-winning film “Parasite” and popular Korean fantasy drama series “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.” Among the company’s recent productions are the romantic drama “Past Lives” with A24. It’s also the company behind the annual KCON Korean pop culture conference and concerts held in downtown Los Angeles in August.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Gal Gadot is moving forward with her Cleopatra movie, and she recently told Vogue Hong Kong that it will “change the narrative” about the historical figure. “Israel borders Egypt, and I grew up with so many stories about Cleopatra, and she’s like a household name,” Gadot said. “You know, if Wonder Woman is the imaginary strong female leader, Cleopatra’s actually the real one. That’s a perfect example of a story that I wanted to tell because I started reading different books about Cleopatra, and I said, ‘Wow, that’s fascinating.’ All I ever saw in regards to Cleopatra from film was that she was this seductive woman who had an affair with Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony. But the truth is, there’s so much more to her.”

Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International Ashland Hill Media Finance has launched a global sales company headed by industry veteran Tamara Birkemoe. Palisades Park Pictures is launching ahead of next month’s Cannes Film Festival, with operations in Los Angeles and London. The venture, which will soon unveil its inaugural slate of projects, comes a year after the launch of Ashland Hill, which was set up last May by Joe Simpson, Simon Williams and Jonathan Bross. Ashland Hill will continue its operations financing films, while PPP will board sales on a handful of Ashland Hill Media Finance titles in addition to a slate of third-party titles.

Earlier this month, Jason Clarke, Scott Eastwood, and Chaske Spencer joined the cast of Kari Skogland‘s “Wind River: The Next Chapter,” an upcoming sequel to Taylor Sheridan‘s 2017 film. Now four more actors join the cast, including Gil Birmingham reprising his role from the original movie.

Before “Yellowstone” became a huge phenomenon on the small screen, Academy Award-nominated writer Taylor Sheridan (“Sicario,” “Hell or High Water”) made waves with his feature film screenwriting and directorial effort on “Wind River.” A murder mystery revenge thriller set in a rural community in Wyoming, the drama starred Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Gil Birmingham, Graham Greene, Jon Bernthal, and Martin Senmeier (“Magnificent Seven”).

Brent Lang Executive Editor Jason Clarke, Scott Eastwood and Chaske Spencer will star in the sequel to “Wind River.” Entitled “Wind River: The Next Chapter,” the film will bedirected by Emmy nominee and BAFTA award winner Kari Skogland.  Patrick Massett and John Zinman have penned the screenplay. As previously announced, Martin Sensmeier will star and reprise his role as Chip Hanson. The original film also starred Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, neither of whom has been attached. According to the official description, the sequel involves the investigation into a series of ritualistic murders on the Wind River reservation. To solve the case, the FBI enlists Chip Hanson, a newly minted tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game, who becomes embroiled in a desperate and dangerous fight between the authorities, a vigilante, and the reservation. Production is currently underway in Calgary.

With Taylor Sheridan out there ruling the world with his “Yellowstone” empire, it’s clear that studios are going to want to hitch their wagons to the filmmaker. Castle Rock Entertainment has announced that it will produce a sequel to the award-winning crime drama Wind River, titled Wind River: The Next Chapter, with production to kick off in January. Martin Sensmeier (1883) will star, reprising his role as Wind River local Chip Hanson, with Kari Skogland (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) set as director.

The movie "Dallas Sting" starring Matthew McConaughey was abruptly put on the chopping block weeks before production was scheduled to begin.  Although it has not been confirmed why the Skydance film was canceled, the producers reportedly received "disturbing allegations surrounding aspects of the true story on which the drama was based," according to the Hollywood Reporter.  The film was slated to highlight the true story of a girls' soccer team that traveled to China to compete in an international tournament. "Dallas Sting" was supposed to be set in 1984, and McConaughey was to star as the team’s coach, Bill Kinder.  Marvel’s "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s" director Kari Skogland and Berlanti Schechter Productions were projected to work on the inspiring sports film.

The “McConassaince” may have ended five or so years ago, but Matthew McConaughey remains a highly bankable movie star. But he hasn’t starred in anything recently, at least not since “The Gentlemen” and Harmony Korine‘s “The Beach Bum” in 2019.

Skydance will no longer move forward with a film called “Dallas Sting” meant to star Matthew McConaughey after an investigation into the film’s true story uncovered disturbing allegations, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.The film from director Kari Skogland (Marvel’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) was meant to kick off production in six weeks and had nearly completed casting. “Dallas Sting” is the true story of a high school girls soccer team that in 1984 went to China and managed to beat some of the best women’s teams in the world from China, Australia, Japan and finally Italy in a championship game.

Matthew McConaughey‘s had a quiet last couple of years in acting. Sure, he led the ensemble cast in Guy Ritchie‘s 2019 film “The Gentlemen,” but outside of “Sing 2,” where he did only voice work, he hasn’t done another movie since.
