Murtada Elfadl Hollywood has not been successful at turning video games into movies — a disappointing streak that “Five Nights at Freddy’s” fails to correct. Despite being shepherded by savvy low-budget horror producer Jason Blum, this is a rather empty and unexciting effort at attracting horror fans during Halloween season. Director Emma Tammi’s film squanders the game’s strange and unique-looking creatures, failing to add recognizable traits to the characters written for the film.

Love it or hate it, Blumhouse continues to do what it does best: make lean, low/mid-budget genre films that help the studio fund its more prestigious fare. And while the quality of these movies varies, there’s certain charm to these B-movies, with Jason Blum more often than not giving young directors a chance to have more creative freedom than they’d get at a larger studio.

Jason Blum may have built a successful little horror studio in Blumhouse Productions the past 23 years, but it’s no match against the biggest pop star in the world. That’s why Blum had no qualms shifting the release date of David Gordon Green‘s “The Exorcist: Believer” to make way for Taylor Swift‘s “Eras Tour” concert film.
The power of Taylor Swift compels you. And it’s also worked its ways on producer Jason Blum, who cast out his The Exorcist: Believer to an earlier October release date to avoid a clash with Swift’s concert film.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Well, “Exorswitft” was a short-lived phenomenon; the nickname for the dual release of “The Exorcist: Believer” and Taylor Swift’s concert film is no more. That’s because Universal and Blumhouse’s spooky sequel “The Exorcist: Believer” has moved up its release date — losing its deliberately timed debut on Friday the 13 (of October) to instead land in theaters on Oct. 6 — in order to avoid the premiere of the much-hyped Eras Tour movie.

In his Week 14 outing, Ray pivots. He’s got a killer panel to parse the issue, three guests who have had outsized success in their domains: The Matrix series co-director Lilly Wachowski, The Last of Us and Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin, and Blumhouse principal Jason Blum, whose trajectory came from an inventive formula that involves transparency, and artists who bet on themselves and share mightily in success. It’s an electric exchange of ideas to heal the rifts between artists and commerce-minded studios, one that might have then rowing in the same directing, toward better and more imaginative film and TV.
