HBO has acquired the Oscar-nominated documentary short “When We Were Bullies,” which will premiere on March 30.“When We Were Bullies” focuses on director Jay Rosenblatt (“Human Remains,” “Phantom Limb”), as he tries to track down people from his 5th grade class to interview them about a severe bullying incident that occurred at their school 50 years ago. Using a mix of archival footage, animation and modern day interviews, Rosenblatt both reconstructs the event and comes to terms with his own sense of shame about what occurred.“Everyone carries pain,” Rosenblatt narrates in the trailer for the short that HBO released. “Yet through that pain, I can see yours.”In addition to directing, Rosenblatt wrote, produced and edited “When We Were Bullies.” The short is one of five nominees in the best documentary short category at the 94th Academy Awards.

HBO Max’s feature film “Batgirl” announced that it casted Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh, a bartender and the best friend of on-screen heroine Gordon.Both Yeoh and Aquino are transgender, marking a historical step for LGBTQIA+ representation as the first live-action feature film for DC Comics franchise that will feature a trans character.She’s slated to perform on-screen along with Leslie Grace, Brendan Fraser, Michael Keaton, J.K. Simmons and Jacob Scipio for the upcoming film adaptation, based on the comic created by Gail Simone with art by Ardian Syaf.While details of the movie are still hushed, Deadline reported that the movie will focus on Batgirl’s battle with the villain Firefly, played by Fraser.

Aquino will play Alysia Yeoh, a trans woman and roommate of Barbara Gordon who was introduced in the “Batgirl” comics by writer Gail Simone and artist Ardian Syaf in 2011. Leslie Grace, who will play Batgirl in the film, leaked Aquino’s casting via a set photo on Instagram with the actress tagged in the picture, which was titled “Barbara and Alysia.” Born in the Philippines, Aquino first rose to prominence in 2017 with her performance as transgender activist Cecelia Chung in the ABC miniseries “When We Rise.” Though she is the first trans actress to play an openly trans role in a DC feature film, a trans character was previously introduced in the fourth season of the DC TV series “Supergirl” with Nia Nal, a superhero played by trans activist and actress Nicole Maines.
