Brent Lang Executive Editor Searchlight Pictures has signed a first-look deal with Olivia Colman and Ed Sinclair’s South of the River Pictures. Under the new pact, the specialty studio, which has worked with Colman on “The Favourite” and “Empire of Light,” will develop and produce feature-length motion pictures with the production company. South of the River Pictures was founded by Colman, Sinclair and their long-time partner in crime, Tom Carver, to develop and produce original scripted comedies and dramas with “an authored sensibility.” Colman and Sinclair have been married since 2001.

In addition to picking up a pair of game shows, The CW has ordered the new original scripted drama Sherlock & Daughter starring David Thewlis (Harry Potter, Fargo).

With Thewlis as Sherlock Holmes, the series puts the detective out of his comfort zone, mysteriously unable to investigate a sinister case without risking the lives of his closest friends. He then meets Amelia (Blu Hunt), an American who, after her mother’s mysterious murder, learns that Sherlock may be her missing father.

All eight episodes of season one premiere on Hulu on Wednesday, November 29.

Previously, “Grace and Frankie” and “Orange Is the New Black” shared that title with seven seasons each. Inspired by the childhoods of Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg, “Big Mouth” follows a group of friends and their hormone monsters as they navigate adolescence, human sexuality and coming of age. Kroll starred alongside John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas and Ayo Edebiri (whose role was originally played by Jenny Slate). Season 6 debuted in 2022, while Season 7 will come in 2023 and 2024.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Will Sharpe, who endeared himself to audiences on “The White Lotus,” is directing a feature film adaptation of Michelle Zauner’s 2021 memoir “Crying in H Mart.” Zauner’s novel centers around her relationship with her Korean heritage and her mother, who died from cancer in 2014. Best known as the frontwoman for indie-pop band Japanese Breakfast, Zauner is adapting the screenplay and will also play a part in the film’s music.  According to the official synopsis from MGM, which is backing the movie, “Crying in H Mart” is a “coming-of age story about a half-Korean daughter who returns to small town Oregon to care for her Korean mother. Critical and smothering Chong-mi and creative and independent Michelle struggle to understand each other across a cultural fault line, only learning to see and accept one another through the formative power of music and the vibrant flavors of Korean cooking.”

But the reality is, in case you missed it, and it feels like some more cynical audiences thought it might not be for them, “Enola Holmes” was absolutely delightful.
