In today’s episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast host Mike DeAngelo saddles up to discuss Paramount+’s latest Taylor Sheridan-produced series, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” The show follows Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) on his journey from a Civil War-era enslaved person and forced Confederate soldier to the first Black U.S. Marshal in history and one of the greatest frontier heroes ever.
Alison Herman TV Critic “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” bears many of the trademarks of executive producer Taylor Sheridan, who now counts the anthology drama among his sprawling (and still growing) stable of shows for the streaming service Paramount+. The hour-long series is a big-budget Western with an overqualified cast — a rough synopsis that also applies to Sheridan touchstones like “1883” and “1923,” both star-studded prequels to his breakout hit “Yellowstone.” This particular ensemble is led by David Oyelowo as Reeves, a real-life historical figure and formerly enslaved U.S.

At the risk of repeating ourselves again, “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan has become one of the top TV creators in TV alongside Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, and other TV moguls. Writer/director Taylor Sheridan (“Wild River,” “Yellowstone,” “Hell Or High Water”) leaves no stone unturned in his exploration of both the Wild Wild West and the echoes of masculinity that still pervade within American culture. Whether it’s “Yellowstone,” a more contemporary look at cowboys and masculine figures created by their rugged environments, or “1883,” a classic Western tale of frontier life, Sheridan constantly reexamines this theme in all his work.
