John Bleasdale Guest Contributor Catherine Martin, the four-time Oscar-winning producer, costume designer and production designer of “Moulin Rouge,” “The Great Gatsby” and “Elvis,” says she is waiting to see what project Baz Luhrmann, her husband and longtime creative partner, will embark on next. Martin is at the Red Sea Film Festival with Luhrmann, whom she started working with on his debut feature, 1992’s “Strictly Ballroom.” Since then, there have been a series of projects marked by their striking visual style, netting Martin a number of nominations and awards. She spoke to Variety.

Carter has again made Academy Award history with her victory Sunday night in Best Costume Design for Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Carter became the first Black woman to ever repeat in an Oscar category, winning her first in 2019 for “Black Panther” and the first Black woman to win two Oscars, period.Carter has a long history with the Academy Awards, first nominated for her work on Spike Lee’s 1992 film “Malcolm X,” she was also nominated for the costumes in Steven Spielberg’s 1997 film “Amistad.”During her speech, Carter expressed appreciation for the honor, particularly in light of a recent personal loss.“Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman,” Carter said.

Carter, who in 2019 became the first Black person to win the Oscar for costume design for her work on Marvel’s “Black Panther,” was recognized for the film’s sequel, “Wakanda Forever.” In her speech, she thanked director Ryan Coogler and asked late “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman to look after her own mother, who recently died at 101. “Nice to see you again,” Carter said as she took the stage. “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman. She endure, she loves, she overcomes, she is every woman in this film. She is my mother. This past week, Mable Carter became an ancestor. This film prepared me for this moment. Chadwick, please take care of Mom. Ryan Coogler, Nate Moore, thank you both for your vision. Together, we are reshaping how culture is represented. The Marvel family, Kevin Feige, Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito and their arsenal of genius, thank you. Baz Luhrmann has arrived at the Oscars with his family!

Charna Flam Production designers from the Oscar-nominated films “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” “The Fabelmans” and “Elvis” are joining the Art Directors Guild (ADG) and Set Decorators Society of America (SDSA) for an in-person panel on Saturday at 3 p.m. PT, which will also be available to stream. Sponsored by Variety, the upcoming panel will bring together the Oscar-nominated production designers and set decorators to discuss their craft and the production process ahead of Sunday night’s ceremony. The panel will feature Christian M. Goldbeck and Ernestine Hippe from “All Quiet on the Western Front”; Dylan Cole, Ben Procter and Vanessa Cole from “Avatar: The Way of Water”; Florencia Martin and Anthony Carlino from “Babylon”; Catherine Martin, Karen Murphy and Bev Dunn from “Elvis”; and Rick Carter and Karem O’Hara from “The Fabelmans.” Former ADG president Thomas A. Walsh and SDSA member Jan Pascale will join together in moderating the panel.

Also joining in the festivities was filmmaker Lachlan Pendragon, director of “An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It,” which is nominated for best animated short film. The event was hosted by Australian Consul-General Los Angeles Ambassador Jane Duke, Ausfilm, Screen Australia and Australians in Film (AiF)

During a lively conversation for TheWrap Screening Series of “Elvis,” Walker was joined by producer-costume designer-production designer Catherine Martin and producer Gail Berman to discuss the hard work, craft, grit (and “girl power”) that went into making the dynamic, colorful biopic. In speaking about the gender disparity in her field, Walker pointed out Luhrmann deserves credit for hiring her to lens a feature film in the first place, 15 years ago.

Shirley Kurata’s win comes as “Everything Everywhere All At Once” has garnered momentum heading into the final phase of Oscar voting which begins on March 2. Kurata bested titans in the field going up against Deborah L. Scott (“Avatar: The Way of Water”), history-making Ruth E. Carter (“Black Panther) and Mayes C. Rubeo (“Thor: Love and Thunder”). Catherine Martin won for her work on Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” Building over 90 looks alone for Austin Butler, Martin, a triple-nominee for production design and best picture remains a favorite.

She also built more than 90 costumes for Austin Butler’s Elvis, a mix of re-creations and fictionalized outfits, and over 9000 costumes for the film overall. She earned a Costume Designers Guild Awardnomination for the work, and landed three Oscar nominations for her work on the film including outstanding costume designer, production design and producer. Here, she talks about how “The Wizard of Oz” impacted her, as did Luhrmann’s respect of crafts.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor The 27th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards returned to an in-person ceremony at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown on Saturday evening, with “Babylon” and “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” among the top honors. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” took home the award for animated feature. “Pachinko,” “The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” and “Severance” were among the main TV winners. The eventual winner of the production design Oscar has landed an ADG nomination. Nicole Kidman presented the Art Directors Guild’s Cinematic Imagery award to “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann and his longtime producing partner and Oscar-winning production and costume designer Catherine Martin. Their 30-year collaboration includes films such as “The Great Gatsby,” “Australia,” “Romeo + Juliet,” “Strictly Ballroom” and “Moulin Rouge!”

A busy weekend of guild and industry awards ceremonies kicked off with the 2023 ADG Awards, the annual ceremony where the Art Directors Guild hands out their year-end kudos for production design. This year’s non-competitive honorees included Guillermo del Toro, Lilly Kilvert as well as Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin.

However, transforming that model into one of true collaboration can make for a much sweeter success story. Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin, the force behind this year’s “Elvis” biopic, have sustained a decades-long partnership, both personally and also professionally. “I am in fact a serial collaborator,” Luhrmann has said of working with the same teams of people repeatedly, a method that has clearly resulted in commercial and critical success if Oscar nominations count as evidence.

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Austin Butler’s agent told him he would need to gain weight to play the older version of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” “I heard that Ryan Gosling when he was going to do ‘The Lovely Bones,’ had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it,” Butler tells Variety. “So I started doing that. I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds. It’s fun for a week, and then you feel awful about yourself. But we were planning on shooting chronologically in the beginning. That quickly went out the window with COVID. It was just impossible.” On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Butler sits down to discuss receiving his first Oscar nomination for best actor. He also discusses renting an apartment after the Warner Bros. corporate cards were shut off following the COVID shutdown. In addition, he talked about whether he would reprise his role as James Garrett in a “Zoey 101” movie or get aged-up to play Sebastian Kydd from “The Carrie Diaries,” so he can play opposite Sarah Jessica Parker from “Sex and the City,” a show he says he watched while in his New York City apartment, taking a bath, and feeling like “a middle-aged woman.”

A crowd of movie lovers, local Academy members and students from the nearby University of Santa Barbara came to see the artisans discuss their processes and talk about the biggest misconception people have about their crafts. The full panel of honorees included “RRR” songwriter M.M Keeravaani, composer Ryan Lott representing Son Lux who did the music for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Elvis” costume designer Catherine Martin, “Babylon” production designer Florencia Martin, “Top Gun: Maverick” cinematographer Claudio Miranda, “The Whale” hairstyling and makeup artist Adrien Morot, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers, “Avatar: The Way of Water” VFX supervisor Eric Saindon and “All Quiet on the Western Front” sound designer Markus Stemler.

Elvis scooped up eight Oscar nominations on Tuesday, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Austin Butler in the title role. The good news dovetailed neatly with the birthday of director Baz Luhrmann’s wife and producing partner Catherine Martin, and their wedding anniversary, and yet tragically, it also comes just two days after the pair attended the funeral service for Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie Presley.
